Sam Hunt’s New Song “Drinkin’ Too Much” Is The Worst Song Ever
WARNING: Some Language
Like an incorrigible habit that only works to expand the gut, shave years off of life, spends your money, and puts distance between yourself and the realization of your goals and dreams, country music should make a resolution to drop Sam Hunt and his big bag of nothing like the smelly, disgusting, cancerous, unhealthy habit he is, and not just put distance between him and the habitual crutch of his shitty non-country pop/hip-hop music, but should celebrate his unceremonious shitcanning like the accomplishment of a lifelong goal similar to climbing the tallest of mountains, or putting a big ol’ check mark beside the biggest and most difficult item on the very top of your coveted bucket list.
I’d down two quarts of black-eyes peas in one sitting with not a trace of seasoning or even a biscuit for sopping to not have to listen to Sam Hunt’s dumbass sing talking ever again in this year or any other. Dammit if we didn’t cut loose of the bad dream that was 2016 just to get hit square in the face with the godawful reality that the mortal coil still harbors enough morons that believe that Sam Hunt has even a modicum of anything to do with country music so that his releasing of a new song means it slithers on to our radar, and like coming up on a bad, boozed-fueled New Years automobile accident, you can’t help but slow down and gawk, even though you’re immediately repelled by the gore and horror your poor senses invariably behold.
From the Mariah Carey college of electronic musical crutching and cultural stultification, Sam Hunt has released a New Years surprise in the form of a new song called “Drinkin’ Too Much.” I take that back, Mariah can actually fucking sing when she’s not mixing champagne with Xanax and her in-ear monitors are operating properly. All Sam Hunt can do is mumble the itinerary of metrosexual nights in Ebonic inflections recounting bouts of self-centered douchebaggery. I understand the value of getting personal in songwriting, but “Drinkin’ Too Much” is so specific and rambling, it comes across like the diseased, mental-health medical transcriptions of a recently-instituted 5150. “Drinkin’ Too Much” isn’t a “song,” it’s an entry from the obsessive compulsive section of the stalker’s almanac.
As for the “music” of this “song,” Sam Hunt didn’t make use of the incredible, world-class talent pool of musicians residing in Nashville, TN right at his fingertips to flesh his idea out. Instead, it sounds like he resorted to some hipster with a MIDI controller and the newest Macbook, doing his worst for a manic-fueled few hours to help out his superstar buddy and score some cash for his cocaine habit. My nephew exhibited more compositional aptitude Christmas morning amateurishly screwing around with a hand-me-down Casiotone, messing with the harpsichord feature while playing to the pre-programmed Bosa Nova beat than “Drinkin’ Too Much” does. And no, this song won’t rosy up after you’ve recovered from your New Years Eve hangover and don’t have to listen to it through the filter of a pounding headache. It’s a dog any day of the year.
“Drinkin’ Too Much” is so bad, after listening to it a Hillary supporter isn’t even as daunted by the idea of suffering through four years of a Trump Administration. If you can make it through this monstrosity, anything is possible. We can do this people! “Drinkin’ Too Much” is so bad, perhaps it will inspire all the peoples of the earth to finally and forever renounce their tribalism and affiliations due to race, gender, religion, location, and social status, and work to banish Sam Hunt from popular culture finally and forever. We can’t agree on shit, but after listening to “Drinkin’ Too Much,” perhaps this is the tragedy that will finally awaken our shared humanity and common purpose to come together to alleviate the burden of ever finding this dude within our earshot in 2017 again, and forevermore into eternity.
January 1, 2017 @ 11:34 am
I could’ve offer a review about this thing even if I wanted to because I don’t know what makes a good R&B song.
He really, really needs to follow Taylor Swift out of Country.
January 1, 2017 @ 3:50 pm
R&B would laugh this out of existence. R&B expects people to actually be able to sing, and don’t even suggest rap, because heck no, this isn’t rap. This song is trying to be Drake, except without being catchy or having a good beat, and btw any serious hip hop fan feels roughly about Drake what country fans feel about Luke.
January 3, 2017 @ 12:33 pm
You actually don’t really need to sing that great in R&B nowadays. It’s more about the melody, beat, etc if you aren’t a great singer. It’s why artists like PARTYNEXTDOOR and Bryson Tiller are pretty big.
January 1, 2017 @ 11:39 am
The song is NOT the worst song ever. It is a fairly decent song, and comparable to stuff Drake is putting out. Is it a country song? NO just like every other Hunt song. In fact id say that this is the most anti-country song he is done (whatever that stands for considering none of his songs are country). I do hope that his song is released to general pop/r&b/adult contemporary studio instead of country radio.
But that does not change the fact that this is NOT a bad song. If all you ever want to listen to is grassroot country and you basically disregard any other style of music (especially one that is undoubtedly the most successful right now – mix of R&B and rap, basically spoken word R&B) , then you would not like the song. But if you approach a song just as a song and be a little more open minded – the song is not that bad.
January 1, 2017 @ 11:44 am
“It is a fairly decent song, and comparable to stuff Drake is putting out.”
LOL
Perhaps Drake has put out a worse song. I wouldn’t know.
Back to listening to my dueling banjos on repeat. Because that’s all I listen to or like.
January 1, 2017 @ 11:48 am
fair enough. If you like country music then you are allowed to. In fact most of what i listen to is country but that doesnt mean i cant disregard a good TLC song even if it is not my musical style.
But i do hope that whatever he is doing is pushed out of country radio to wherever it belongs. Happy new years! Looking forward to reading more stuff from you.
January 1, 2017 @ 12:56 pm
Hey, we’re all music fans first. I like all kinds of music. But when you call a “mix of R&B and rap” (your words) song country, and it’s released by what is supposed to be a “country” artist to “country” radio, it’s going to get judged as a country song.
I wish all the best to Sam Hunt if he wants to be honest with his fans and call his music what it is. That’s what Taylor Swift did, and it resulted in her biggest commercial success. The reason Sam Hunt is releasing this stuff is because he knows if he went pop, he would immediately become a very small fish in a very large sea.
January 1, 2017 @ 2:22 pm
Stop it. This is the worst thing I’ve ever heard. It is really not even a song…
January 2, 2017 @ 8:08 pm
It will probably be a big hit. Engagement announcement – pure marketing.
January 3, 2017 @ 4:52 pm
Man I hear what you’re saying, but this song really sucks even if it wasn’t classified as country… I don’t like Drake though (or most RnB) so maybe it’s just not my style.
January 5, 2017 @ 9:21 am
Dude how much do you hate Drake? Because this is to Drake what a 10th Grade shop project Pontiac Fiero fauxrarri is to a ’64 275 GTB. This is just unadulterated derivative phoned-in bullshit. It’s free because nobody would buy it.
January 1, 2017 @ 11:45 am
Posted a comment but it did not go through but ill post it again.
THIS IS NOT THE WORST SONG EVER. This is a good song and very comparable to successful hits from artists like drake. It is hip, genuine, and has a good chorus. Is it a country song? absolutely not just like every other hunt song. In fact it is his most anti country song (whatever that would mean considering none of his songs are remotely country). I hope it is not released on country radio and that it does not take away spotlight from other more deserving country songs that need to be on the radio right now.
With that being said, THIS IS NOT A BAD SONG. It is a fairly good one. The only way you could have reacted the way you did in this article was if all you ever listened to country music and disregarded every other genre of music. But if you were a lil bit open minded and basically didnt completely hate the most successful style of music there is right now, you would not find the song that bad.
January 1, 2017 @ 4:32 pm
Its not a song, not even by definition. Its a terrible slam poem with special effects, I will bet my paycheck the small riff in the background is lifted from an R. Kelly, boys2men, or some other generic 90s r&b song. I know I have heard the music before.
Look Sam, I mean Batool, it doesn’t take it open mind to like this song it takes ear plugs and seroquel.
January 1, 2017 @ 11:56 am
This song is NOT bad!!! lol you hate on every song that doesn’t sound like Cody Jinks or George jones. Never seen you like a modern country song…maybe Monroe or Pardi but don’t hate on Sam. He’s not going away. Y’all better stop up your ears cause more is to come from Sam (And I know your readers love to argue so y’all can argue. I’ll still love Sam and his music no matter what and I refuse to listen to country not played on the radio…Chris Stapleton sucks, George Strait sucks, Loretta Lynn sucks/it all sounds the same…DEPRESSING
January 1, 2017 @ 12:11 pm
Lololololol I see what you did there
January 1, 2017 @ 12:22 pm
Sierra …do you even hear yourself ? You are a POP music fan and Sam Hunt is POP music . So you are basically in agreement with the comments here . Of course you would thing Chris and George and Loretta suck if you are a POP music fan . You are familiar with POP’s approach to music and selling an image rather than a song . You are not a country music fan . We get it . And that’s perfectly alright as long as YOU understand that .
January 1, 2017 @ 12:36 pm
Sierra you’re a dumbass you’re on a country music preservation website not a pop/Hip-Hop website what did you expect?
January 1, 2017 @ 1:01 pm
“Chris Stapleton sucks, George Strait sucks, Loretta Lynn sucks/it all sounds the same…DEPRESSING”
Wait, and “Drinkin’ Too Much” is lighthearted? This makes George Strait sound like jangle pop. This song is so depressing, it’s diseased.
” Never seen you like a modern country song.”
Bullshit. I have Florida Georgia Line’s “Dirt” two guns up. Here’s an entire list of modern songs and albums I liked:
https://savingcountrymusic.com/the-best-of-mainstream-country-music-in-2016/
January 1, 2017 @ 4:44 pm
George Strait and Loretta Lynn that’s true country music!!! Rap and sing in a song, that is NOT COUNTRY MUSIC!!
January 1, 2017 @ 3:33 pm
You are quite obviously not a country music fan…so why are you here?
January 1, 2017 @ 4:56 pm
Was being offended by something a 2016 thing or is it carrying over in 2017 cause I’m offended about Stapleton, Strait and Loretta “sucking”!
January 1, 2017 @ 6:10 pm
How can you say you’re a country fan if you think Georgeand Loretta suck?? Get outta here!
January 2, 2017 @ 1:24 pm
Are you 17? There is no excuse for not knowing how to use proper punctuation and grammar. maybe that is Sam Hunt’s target audience, the youth and the illiterate.
January 2, 2017 @ 8:11 pm
Younger. I had punctuation and grammar down at 17.
January 2, 2017 @ 7:47 pm
Sorry Sierra but this song is not remotely country in anyway shape or form, if you don’t like what’s being said on this article please leave and go somewhere else. And please don’t call yourself country music fan if you really think that Sam Hunt is doing a good thing for country music anything that Cody George or Loretta sucks.
January 2, 2017 @ 10:04 pm
So it seems to me the core argument here is not what song / artist / genre sucks or not. Most people think that music other than theirs sucks. Always been that way. I’m thinking the real argument is who gets the authority to define any particular music selection as “Country”. So…. who decides who gets the authority?
January 3, 2017 @ 7:26 pm
Anything tween girls love will fade as soon as those tween girls grow up. Dude’s got maybe two years left at best.
January 1, 2017 @ 11:59 am
I meant Stop hating on Sam he’s not going anywhere
January 1, 2017 @ 12:40 pm
If you don’t like it leave nobody forced you to come to this website.
January 1, 2017 @ 12:45 pm
I don’t hate Hunt. I hate the morons who are trying to sell this as country music.
January 1, 2017 @ 12:02 pm
I lasted 9 seconds, that was 9 seconds too long. Back to listening to Guy Clark.
January 1, 2017 @ 1:33 pm
I gave it a bit more than that because I thought it would lead into something – some acoustic guitar or piano or something. But, no. Just the same atmospheric crap. Ridiculous. And not country in any way, shape, or form. It reminds me of the episode of Friends where the gang finds out that Ross played keyboards in high school only to hear him perform and it’s all the silly sounds – cat meows and car horns and so on – the keyboard can make. If this bullcrap is talent, I think I’ve got a new calling in life.
January 1, 2017 @ 2:08 pm
I made it a minute 30 seconds. I tried it knowing it’d amuse me, but 90 seconds in my amusement had turned to anger.
January 1, 2017 @ 4:00 pm
The more I listen to Guy Clark the more I think he may be the best songwriter of all time.
January 1, 2017 @ 11:01 pm
I got to the part where he mentioned Pelham, AL. After that I just ended it in anger that a place I once called home was now attached to what I hate.
January 1, 2017 @ 12:07 pm
Wish Sam Hunt would leave the airwaves. He is awful
January 1, 2017 @ 12:16 pm
Sam Hunt can go to hell. His music, if you can call it that, is already there.
January 1, 2017 @ 12:17 pm
Holy shit .
The ultimate shame and tragedy and injustice of crap like this getting any attention or airplay or being allowed to influence ( influence ? ) up and coming writers and artists is what it takes away in attention and airplay and INCOME from REAL writers and artists. …..Artists and writers and musicians steeped in tradition with a respect for the genre and whose passion for music has driven them to work hard to improve , to grow , to refine their skills and to bring their best to the world .Of course this kind of injustice is not uncommon in pop culture . Bad actors are paid big money to make crappy movies all the time while the best sit on the sidelines waiting for an opportunity to , once again , demonstrate WHY they are the best . Shitty no-talent pop stars /rappers/ crank out one more generic piece of unnecessary ear candy BECAUSE THE POWERS THAT BE LET THEM DO SO …..BECAUSE THE POWERS THAT BE WOULDN’T KNOW REAL TALENT OR ARTISTRY IF IT BIT THEM AND BECAUSE THE PEOPLE THEY ARE MARKETTING TO DO NOT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE ANYWAY . Hunt illustrates that with this track which I could get through about a 1/3rd of .
LIFE IS JUST TOO SHORT to condone or even allow this stuff to be a part of it when so many, many incredibly inspirational , artistic , worthwhile and respectful options exist .
The attention this kind of unexamined nonsense garners ( Trump ) is mind-blowing at a time when alternatives exist by the truckload and are amazingly accessible . I think it reflects the apathetic , passive and outright lazy nature of a pop culture more finicky and self-centered than ever , thanks to marketing and the declining role of spirituality in our society . And I’ll stop there before I hurt myself .
January 1, 2017 @ 12:17 pm
@sierra you keep good country artists names out of your mouth.
January 1, 2017 @ 12:18 pm
Maybe this will prove to be a bellwether for 2017. If “country” radio picks it up and it does well, then we can be sure of another depressing year for the mainstream country format. But if it gloriously fails like Rhett’s “Vacation” did, then maybe the powers-that-be in Nashville will finally give-up on their monogenre aspirations. If a Drake fan likes this stuff, then so be it — that’s where it belongs, next to Drake on Top 40 KISS-FM stations.
January 1, 2017 @ 12:26 pm
Fuck Sam Hunt and this song too. With somebody else’s dick. I don’t know what’s worse — Sam Hunt in general, this song in particular, or the people who foist Sam Hunt on us giving MacBook Pros such a bad name.
(I have a MacBook Pro, with all sorts of real music on it.)
January 1, 2017 @ 12:29 pm
Sadly, this “worst song ever” sounds like every droning, empty, soulless piece of garbage the pop chart spit out in 2016, between Drake and douchebag hipster dj’s like the Chainsmokers. Sam Hunt is such a wannabe it’s embarrassing.
January 1, 2017 @ 12:33 pm
Eubonics? Do you mean Ebonics?
It is bad. I file it next to Wasnt That Drunk.
Bottom line is the abundance of unsubstatial lyrics and complete disregard for actual musicianship have plagued radio far too long.
January 1, 2017 @ 12:34 pm
Good song ain’t country thou doesn’t deserve to be called country or be put near anything country
January 1, 2017 @ 12:40 pm
I agree with Batool Abbasi, this is not the worse song ever, and he’s decent enough to avoid to sound like some fake country, he just maybe wants to change of category, and cross the border to RnB or something else, maybe he runs after what could really brings him success (i mean huge success,I mean international success ? ) and well, it’s his right. But let’s hope that DJs won’t play his song as a country one…
January 1, 2017 @ 1:07 pm
Look folks, obviously calling this song the “worst song ever” is a bit of hyperbole.
I think we can all agree that the worst song ever was actually Sam Hunt’s “Break Up in a Small Town.”
🙂
January 1, 2017 @ 12:42 pm
I just got to the part about student loans then realized I better get my payment out ASAP.
January 1, 2017 @ 12:51 pm
I won’t even try to listen to it. I had thought maybe Sam had finally had his 15 minutes of fame and was gone – so sorry to start 2017 with his bad stuff – can’t even call it music. I really love some of the new songs that are out right now and was hoping this was the way it was going.
January 1, 2017 @ 1:01 pm
Either the industry is paying people to promote this song in the comments section or you really shouldn’t come to a website called “saving country music” expecting rave reviews for the garbage that is put out on country radio in this day and age. I find it hard to understand why record companies are so hell bent on blurring the line between country and pop? Why can’t we just go back to the mid 2000’s where a lot of country music could be considered adult contemporary but still could be recognized as having a genuinely country sound. At least there was some effort put into the songwritting and real instruments were used! God forbid an artist acually tries to put out a quality song! All the artist from before 2010 have virtually disappeared give or take tim mcgraw, brad paisley, etc. The whole stigma of not promoting the singles of older artists is horses**t. I would rather hear the newer stuff from lee ann womack on radio than hear some pop diva like marren morris spew out some nostalgia fueled trash like “80’s Mercedes”. I miss the days where I could turn on my local radio station that wasn’t owned by clear channel and I heart media and hear something good instead of repeating recent top ten songs all day every day. In the end we can only hope that people like scott borchetta get their head out of their ass and quit polluting the airwaves with the sort of mindless pollution that is represented in “drinkin’ too much”. I miss the days when country radio was family friendly and people like phil vassar were still relevant. Oh well I guess I’ll continue to pay for satellite radio where I get stations like Y2Kountry, Prime (80’s and 90’s) Country, and willies roadhouse.
January 1, 2017 @ 10:57 pm
I’ve had a theory for a while that the industry has people flood reviews and comment sections with positive reviews for their own stuff. I happened to see reviews for Reba’s album back in 2007, and there was an odd number of people not only saying that she was nothing compared to Taylor Swift, but were promoting Swift’s album. I think the people here are probably just morons who saw the whole “Worst Song Ever” tag and flipped out. They’re an interesting bunch though, that’s for sure. I don’t think people really care anymore about music genre, they just want a bunch of lightweight fluff that doesn’t make them think.
January 2, 2017 @ 4:29 am
lol “nighthawk” you got theories, dont ya?
January 1, 2017 @ 1:22 pm
If this is country, then Stapleton may have a future in smooth jazz. He should think about it.
January 1, 2017 @ 1:26 pm
Also, it occurs to me that I would much, much rather listen to Corb Lund sing about student visas than listen to Sam Hunt talk-sing about student loans.
January 1, 2017 @ 1:34 pm
That song just gave me aids. Full-blown aids. I need to go drink bleach and feel better
January 1, 2017 @ 1:39 pm
Worst Song Ever might be a bit of hyperbole but I think it would make a great topic for a post.
I’ll have to think further about it but while I’m not sure about this song by Sam Hunt is on the list I’m willing to put forward “Achy Breaky Heart” as a strong nominee for WSE. If we expand this beyond Country Music then I’m torn between “Having a Wonderful Christmas Time” by Sir Paul or “We Built This City” by Starship with an honorable mention for for “Ding Dong Song” by Gunther.
January 2, 2017 @ 9:55 am
The best song ever is “I Will Always Love You” (Dolly Parton) and the worst song ever is “I Will Always Love You” (Whitney Houston).
January 2, 2017 @ 11:04 am
My husband and I agree on next to nothing, but “Wonderful Christmas Time” gives us both hives. My biggest WTF moment of 2016 was learning that there are actually multiple covers of it. *urp* (Scuse me)
January 1, 2017 @ 1:49 pm
Man that’s crap. Any bro-country song from the last few years sounds better than that horrible thing. At least they had some sort of melody to them. This ain’t even catchy. How could you like a “song” that barely is a song. It sounds like mumbling over noise. There’s no hook. There’s nothing for you to even remember it by. I’ve already forgotten it. If this becomes a hit, I might as well start a career in music. I’ll just use my iPad and sling out a beat or two and ramble about random shit. I’ll make it big. 🙂
January 2, 2017 @ 11:16 am
That’s exactly how Beck got started.
January 10, 2017 @ 7:48 am
Right – and that was over 20 years ago! And at that point quite innovative and exciting – and NO, he never called it country. It was the reflection of a young kid in his early twenties experimenting with sounds to create a new tonal landscape.
Having interviewed Beck twice – he has a deep knowledge of music and it’s history. Touching everything from Lydia Mendoza, Hank Williams, Gram Parsons to Miles Davis in the interview was more thank refreshing.
Sam Hunt is no Beck. His music is basically lowest common denominator fodder food for the masses, who don’t know any better and that’s the problem! And it will get worse, as the kids today are now growing up with that crap and are told that is country.
January 1, 2017 @ 1:54 pm
THIS IS BLOODY GARBAGE!!!! Music like this needs to be outlawed, made illegal. What shit!! This guy and his tunes are a joke. Besides teenage girls, who in their right mind listens to this crap???
January 1, 2017 @ 2:03 pm
Teenage girls aren’t in their right minds
January 1, 2017 @ 2:02 pm
Very well written and spot on
January 1, 2017 @ 2:19 pm
OK. Worst ever? Nah. BUT! why doesn’t this guy just release his stuff to urban/pop and leave Nashville in the rear view? I have recently figured out that I kind of like Drake so this doesn’t really bother me. BUT! Why does Country radio even try to play this?
It’s ok if you feel like County music speaks to you but then just write a straight up country song. No EDM, no spoken/rap. This is just too strange.
Even though I don’t dislike it, I feel the need to hate it because it is so unCountry. Has this guy ever explained his raison d’etre? WTF!
January 1, 2017 @ 3:20 pm
You’re right–if Hunt tried to go pop he’d basically be Mat Kearney who is already a really small fish in a really big pond. Thing is, Hunt isn’t anywhere near as good as Kearney so maybe a minnow in a really big ocean?
Yeah, this song is hideously awful but i can’t say it’s worse than Vacation. Maybe call it a draw?
January 1, 2017 @ 3:20 pm
I was curious about how this could possibly be worse than, say, “1994,” “Truck Yeah,” “Boys ‘Round Here,” “That’s My Kind of Night,” or any number of songs by Florida Georgia Line, but I couldn’t even make it past the 10-second mark. :p
January 2, 2017 @ 3:24 pm
Those songs have a somewhat catchy sound, but this and all of Sam’s other songs are just boring generic pop “songs” with a southern accent.
January 1, 2017 @ 3:58 pm
God you Sam Hunt defenders are quite possibly the biggest diaper wearing cry-babies in the history of music fandom. I can’t even tell which group is worse, FGL fans or Sam Hunt fans. Hell after listening to this song, I think Garth’s “Baby Let’s Lay Down and Dance” is like a field of daisies compared to this load of fucking shit.
If you got a problem with us calling out a bad song, take your God Damn business elsewhere and leave us Country fans alone.
January 1, 2017 @ 3:58 pm
Look, Y’all are so rude! Sam Hunt is a GREAT singer and this new song is personal to him! THINK ABOUT OTHERS! You wouldn’t want anyone to say something bad about your personal life, would you? To me, this song it great and I LOVE SAM HUNT!
January 1, 2017 @ 4:50 pm
I wish Sam hunt would say something about my personal life, not his drunk douche bag existence. That’s what music is supposed to do, hit you out of left field speak to your experience that you thought no one else went through. If you identify with Sam Hunt or Luke you aren’t a country music fan, cause the only way to live the life they are talking about is to either be rich or live off your parents. You can’t have responsibilities and spend nearly ten grand jacking up your truck, you can’t blatantly treat any woman the way you want without getting knocked out. Who the fuck can go out every night of the week drunkenly chasing girls? Trust fund babies, whatever you want to call it… Hipsters… If a man does this once there are consequences, but not for Sam and Luke and rich kids that love their music.
But Cody, Chris, Justin wells, matt woods, Evan felker, Jason, they all understand this. And tell it like it is.
January 3, 2017 @ 6:03 pm
”That’s what music is supposed to do, hit you out of left field speak to your experience that you thought no one else went through. If you identify with Sam Hunt or Luke you aren’t a country music fan, cause the only way to live the life they are talking about is to either be rich or live off your parents.”
You absolutely NAIL it with this Jacob . These guys are SUPPOSED to be echoing MY experiences …giving ME a voice and making MY circumstances relatable by REAL people with REAL lives . These bullshit songs are self-centered musical masturbation .
January 2, 2017 @ 11:28 am
Stop being a fat stereotype.
January 2, 2017 @ 7:56 pm
You know what happens when you write a post like that? Huh? You know what happens????
…YOU JUST MADE THE LIST!!!!!
January 3, 2017 @ 11:03 am
Sam is going to get “IT!”
January 1, 2017 @ 4:04 pm
Look, Y’all are so rude! Sam Hunt is a GREAT singer and this new song is personal to him! THINK ABOUT OTHERS! You wouldn’t want anyone to say something bad about your personal life, would you? To me, this song it GREAT, and I LOVE SAM HUNT!
January 2, 2017 @ 3:25 pm
Do you call your self a country fan? cuz…………………….
January 3, 2017 @ 3:01 pm
You are obviously between the age of 8 and 13. When you grow up you will realize just how shitty Sam Hunt, Luke Aldean, the Florida Georgia Douchebags, Thomas Rhett and others really are. It’s fine that they make awful music, but calling them Country is insulting to real Country fans.
January 3, 2017 @ 9:18 pm
I am 17 and I see that that pop country is awful.
January 3, 2017 @ 10:02 pm
Sorry pal, that comment was directed at the sam lover that you replied to.
January 1, 2017 @ 4:05 pm
Trigger….. why don’t you tell us how you really feel? LOL…..
I’ve heard worse, I just don’t remember when. I guess if you’re into his style it’s prob’ly pretty good…. ya know, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. But it ain’t what I’d call country and being I’ve been listening to (and judging) for a looooooong time so I feel qualified to say that.
January 1, 2017 @ 4:12 pm
Ya! what SamHunt_Lover said is totally true! Why do you guys say such bad things about a song? If you didn’t like it than mind your own darn business! Don’t be so mean!
January 1, 2017 @ 6:16 pm
Nobody here wouldn’t say anything bad about Sam Hunt if he packed his shit up and left Country Radio. Nothing he has ever released has been even remotely Country. If you don’t want to hear anything bad about Sam Hunt then find yourself a Sam Hunt Lover website and stay their.
January 4, 2017 @ 1:22 am
You don’t even have an argument… Just “Don’t be mean”. Try and defend him as a country music artist…. Go ahead…. I’ll wait
January 1, 2017 @ 4:19 pm
If there is one thing I like about the song is that how personal it is for Sam Hunt.
For a song regardless of genre I don’t mind it, also while it has been released publicly it hasn’t hit country radio so it could just be a song to keep his fans (which Sam Hunt has many!) happy for the time being.
As a country song yeah, it’s a zero. Also could never see this working at country radio
January 1, 2017 @ 4:24 pm
Hey Trigger,
Remember when I asked where Sam Hunt was on your worst songs of 2016 list? I don’t think there will be a problem having this one on your 2017 list..
January 1, 2017 @ 4:33 pm
Ok Steve, this song is not personal to you so stop judging, same with you Trigger…Not happy with how the world is so rude for such a GREAT singer like Sam Hunt.
January 1, 2017 @ 4:52 pm
Whatever, this guy ain’t real… Unless its Sam himself or his boyfriend Luke(from the song). If you like Sam hunt that much you got a lot of growing up to do.
January 1, 2017 @ 5:00 pm
While I agree that this commenter is being annoying. I find it incredibly rude to assume Sam Hunt is gay.
Also if they like Sam Hunt then whatever. They dont need any growing up its their choice and if his music resonates with him/her than good for him.
January 1, 2017 @ 5:35 pm
I’m not assuming anything, don’t be so politically correct. Its just a joke, you know straight men don’t like to be called gay, its not personal just giving him shit for supporting the enemy. Get over it. Makes em tougher.
January 1, 2017 @ 5:41 pm
Supporting the enemy? As in Sam Hunt? Like he’s out to destroy country music? I don’t know just seems kinda crazy to say he’s the enemy.
There will always be bad music but there’s plenty of good music in the mainstream, why focus on negative and more importantly why assume acts like Sam Hunt, Luke Bryan, Kelsea Ballerini etc. are out to destroy country music. Have they ever said they would? No! If you don’t like their music fine but don’t assume they are terrible people for the music they put out, that’s just not right
January 2, 2017 @ 2:09 pm
I do agree with Raymond here because it is not nice call Sam Hunt gay because it is very offensive even Trigger agree. Just judge on his music but don’t judge on a person. Sam might be a nice person but I don’t really care most of his music even like Thomas Rhett he seems like a nice person but I don’t really care for most of his music except “Die of a Happy Man”. That’s all I say so end of this discussion.
January 2, 2017 @ 3:33 pm
And he did just announced he’s engaged. So much for that theory.
January 2, 2017 @ 3:51 pm
Because he sucks. That’s why we’re “rude.”
January 1, 2017 @ 4:47 pm
Dear Sam,
Quit fucking around screwing up country music and just go to pop radio already. You definitely have the talent to succeed in pop music, but you need to get the hell out of country.
Love,
Amanda
January 1, 2017 @ 5:09 pm
I think Sam would get killed in pop…maybe I’m wrong. But in pop he’s another white guy with guitar trying to do psuedo r&b stuff. What’s going to separate him from Nial Horan, Nick Jonas, Bieber, Sheeran, James Bay, Sean Mendes, etc etc…except actually most of them are better vocalists, and several also good dancers and/or musicians.
January 2, 2017 @ 5:44 pm
At least in pop, Sam wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb for all of the wrong reasons. Take Your Time and Leave the Night On would actually be good songs if they were filed in pop, where they belong, instead of country.
January 1, 2017 @ 5:03 pm
As for worst song ever, Drinkin’ Too Much is bad, Break Up In a Small Town is bad, but in my opinion, nothing has ever been able to match the sheer awfulness that is the garbage dumpster fire in hell South Side by Thomas Rhett. South Side is, in my opinion, the worst song ever. Thank God it will likely never be released as a single. A close second for worst song ever is Thomas Rhett’s Vacation.
January 2, 2017 @ 3:05 pm
I had to look that one up. I didn’t listen to it, just looked at the lyrics. Dear god. Chris Stapleton is a co-writer of course; that man has done more harm than good to the genre I swear.
January 2, 2017 @ 5:51 pm
As an artist himself, Chris has got some solid material. As a songwriter, in my opinion, it’s a mixed bag. He’s credited with some great stuff (check out Gary Allan’s “Drinkin’ Dark Whiskey” and Ashley Monroe’s “If the Devil Don’t Want Me”), some decent stuff (“Drink a Beer”), and some outright dog turds (“South Side”).
January 1, 2017 @ 5:51 pm
I will not attempt to listen to this garbage song from Sam Hunt. I rather listen to Chet Atkins, early Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty. Non country is Pentatonix and Straight no chaser.
January 1, 2017 @ 6:08 pm
wut.
the actual fuck. Is this going to be marketed as country?
January 1, 2017 @ 6:17 pm
I loved the Between the Pines mix tape and Montevallo for the most part. The one thing that has pissed me off the most is all of that was labeled as country, when there was not an ounce of country on either one. I liked Sam for a long time, before he was even played on the radio but I’m over his stuff being marketed as country. Now this trash?? This isn’t good within any genre, whatsoever. Whoever told him that this was good, needs smacked upside the head. Shit like this is why I don’t listen to mainstream radio on any level these days. I can take country radio every now and then but I find myself changing it more than actually listening to it.
January 1, 2017 @ 6:42 pm
I agree with Sierra.
Sam is the MAN and his new song is ace.
So predictable Trig bashes on the new, improved country music be it pop/edm/hiphop/rock whatever. Save the tear in my beer shit.
PS Trig: My boy Brantley’s got a new record coming out and I’m already preparing my counterreview to what will be you bashing another great record. So be ready Triggy. I’m gonna drop a can of whoopass.
January 1, 2017 @ 7:54 pm
I’m curious Studley . What , in your opinion , makes this a country song ?
January 1, 2017 @ 8:23 pm
Well Prince Albert, I think country has moved forward from Merle Haggard and George Strait. It has EVOLVED (I love using that “Trigger” word, just to stir Triggy up) and gotten way better for a rock and RNB guy like me. I hate twangy country old school shit. I like the new stuff because it doesn’t sound like the old stuff. I have no problem calling it country because it riles tear in my beer listeners up and makes them all hasty, which is always a treat. I LOVE the new country. Game on.
January 1, 2017 @ 8:59 pm
Studley…..
You seem to be confirming that you aren’t a country music fan but a rock and R&B fan . And that’s terrific . There’s lots of good rock and R & B around . But I’m not sure that qualifies you to comment on artists in a genre you don’t seem to have as much knowledge of . I love r& b and great rock stuff too . But I’m sure you’ve seen how radio has all but eradicated rock from mainstream programming and how they are attempting to do the same with Country music . In the end , we’ll be left with some kind of homogenized genre which has no earmarks in terms of style , tradition or history and which appeals only to an uncaring lowest common denominator in terms of listeners if radio and labels have their way and artists themselves have no say .
I think you’d agree that it would be great to have a choice of rock radio stations as we did 15-20 years ago . Not the same songs , of course , but a place for the genre to survive and and flourish while maintaining its character . As a fan of the rock genre I’m certain you wouldn’t want to become targeted by radio/sponsors/labels as one of the lowest common denominator of uncaring and unconcerned listeners . Hopefully this helps you to understand how passionate fans of the Country genre feel with radio trying to force us to become part of the ‘lowest common denominator ‘ demographic who they see only as uncaring potential consumers to profit from .
If George Strait was being played on my favorite rock station and CALLED rock , I’d be freaking out . When Sam Hunt gets played on a country station and is called ” country ” , I know I’m being disrespected by the artist AND the media the way you would if they played George Strait or Alan Jackson on YOUR favorite rock station .
January 1, 2017 @ 7:58 pm
^^He just went full-retard. Never go full-retard.
January 1, 2017 @ 8:27 pm
God bless ya, a throbbing headache comes right up through your heels up through the hip bone, the knee bone, up the spine, up through the back through your head like Satan was belchin’ through ya, is that it?!
January 2, 2017 @ 8:29 am
Nope, it’s more akin to walking through a thin cloud of gnats. Irritating but ultimately inconsequential.
January 2, 2017 @ 6:04 pm
Mr. Senator, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
January 1, 2017 @ 8:28 pm
C’mon down Jim Bob. Oh Jim Bob God Bless Ya!
January 3, 2017 @ 3:37 pm
Studley I’m guessing you are either Sam Hunt or Kanye West. Either way, about as smart as a snickers bar.
January 8, 2017 @ 7:11 pm
They are movie quotes dumbass. Besides Kanye and Sam are great artists.
January 2, 2017 @ 4:07 pm
I’m totally with ya on Brantley, but really Sam Hunt’s music is no good no matter what genre it’s in. It’s just generic, boring pop/r&b from just another fool who Nashville is mooching off of for nothing more than money. I’d take any “shitty” traditional country song over Sam Hunt any day. I seriously am praying for the day he goes to pop.
January 3, 2017 @ 3:33 pm
New and Improved Country??? You are fucked!
January 1, 2017 @ 6:54 pm
It’s R&B with song writers that think they know how to write country song lyrics.
January 1, 2017 @ 7:03 pm
Lol either a lot of people struggle with conveying satire, or the Sam Hunt fans really came out of the woodwork on this one.
January 1, 2017 @ 8:01 pm
He sounds like Macklemore had a stroke. It’s garbage. He makes Thomas Rhett sound good and I would rather have every one of my teeth pulled out with no drugs than listen to Thomas Rhett .
January 1, 2017 @ 8:28 pm
Each to his own taste! Sam Hunt has incredible talent, writing songs as well as singing them! So he doesn’t sound like everyone else, big deal!!!! That’s who he is! Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, William Michael Morgan and others might disagree with all the negatives above, as Sam Hunt has written hits for them. I’m tired of the nay sayers who put down this talented singer/songwriter. Music evolves, even country music. I’ve been to several of his concerts. He is a classy guy, who thankfully doesn’t have to live the scripted life of every other musician. I admire his individuality, creativity and strength to put his feelings out there. I appreciate his ability to be his own man and do things the way he wants to. Get a life and embrace something different. I love his music.
January 1, 2017 @ 8:39 pm
I survived listening to it lol but yeah I can also agree it definitely doesn’t sound country.
January 1, 2017 @ 8:53 pm
If all it takes is a repeated organ loop, some finger snaps, and talking over it all, I need to hop on my computer, fire up GarageBand and start getting rich.
January 1, 2017 @ 9:09 pm
I don’t know hat is worse this song, Donkey, Vacation, Fix, or Break up with him, snapback.
January 1, 2017 @ 9:26 pm
What is this crap? My ears are bleeding, make it stop. Listen to Cal Smith sing The Lord Knows I’m Drinking . . . now that’s country music. If this is what is passing as country I’m so glad I have my Dad’s record collection.
January 1, 2017 @ 10:21 pm
It’s almost as stupid as his facial hair.
January 2, 2017 @ 3:29 pm
I don’t like the dude’s music, but what exactly is wrong with his beard? It looks pretty well trimmed and normal to me.
January 2, 2017 @ 1:31 am
Sam Hunt just did the unimaginable – he did a new song that sounds even MORE uncountry than ANYTHING he’s ever done!
Wow.
January 2, 2017 @ 7:32 am
Ok… I TOTALLY AGRRE WITH SHANNON! So what if he doesn’t sound like every other country music singer/songwriter… He is his own person and can do what he wants. I’m pretty sure that he made that song when he was thinking about his personal life and to make it right on the spot, I think its AMAZING. SO GET IT TOGETHER PEOPLE, If you don’t like it then don’t listen to it…End of story but people are talking bad about Thomas Rhett and Sam Hunt. To me I think they are really good singers. So stop being rude and get it together.
January 2, 2017 @ 11:42 am
My friend Sylvia and Robbin Agree with you!
January 2, 2017 @ 7:43 am
Wow, this is utter tripe. I wouldn’t call it the worst song ever, simply because we don’t know what other atrocity he’s recorded, but this is why I have Sirrius and don’t listen to the two local ‘country’ stations.
January 2, 2017 @ 7:46 am
If I’m catching all the lyrics correct it appears to be extremely personal obviously directed at a past relationship. I’ll give him credit for laying it out there in public. Certainly not the worst song ever but certainly not good. But the fact the song is ‘real’ gives the title and lyrics a pass for me personally. I can’t fault a guy for trying.
I don’t get into the country-not country. Music is music and I’m not into labels. The whole concept of country radio is a complete joke anyhow. Find what you like and listen to it….. genius!!!!
January 2, 2017 @ 10:53 am
I think the point is finding country music….. labels are here to stay and for a reason. They sell. They also influence the uninformed who then swear they are right, to wit; the broo-ha-ha with Beyonce and the Grammy awards. And while they count for little among traditionalist, they carry weight with the uninformed who swear by labels.
January 2, 2017 @ 11:11 am
Labels are good. They help us sort things out, find styles we like, and give artists a market to seek. Music that has a traceable lineage is a good thing.
For people who want to listen to something from the lineage of Jimmy Rogers and the Carter Family, through Hank Williams, Bob Wills, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, George Strait, up until now, it’s good to have a label for that sort of sound, which, from just that list, can encompass quite a few variances, but all with a common thread.
Sam Hunt doesn’t follow that lineage, and doesn’t belong in Country. You can enjoy his music(but I wouldn’t understand why), but he doesn’t belong. The problem comes when people like him are marketed over people who actually play and sing country music.
January 2, 2017 @ 11:22 am
I get it and by the definition anyone who listens to music is into labels because to your point, there has to be some form of master catalog. My intended point was different; I don’t get into caring what music gets folded into which labels. Which, fairly, has brought critism of why I take the time to read this site daily. For me that’s not why I’m here and guess what I’m saying is I don’t give two shits what type music Billboard wants to consider Sam Hunt. I just know what I like and what I don’t like….. and for me that falls into many different music ‘labels’.
January 3, 2017 @ 2:36 pm
The strangest thing about this song for me was the fact that he’s apologizing for putting her out in the public eye through songs on Montevello (and the album title) then goes into even more odd details about their relationship, wishing she’d let him pay her student loans, and talking about being drunk and confessing everything to her in a hotel.
January 2, 2017 @ 7:59 am
To think I was really looking forward to new music from him, what a rude awakening (hopefully it’s just a buzz single). I’m really curious as to how radio handles this
January 2, 2017 @ 8:20 am
This song does have drake like qualities.
January 2, 2017 @ 11:35 am
Wow, Sam Hunt really gets the SCM crowd riled up. RELAX…it’s all gonna be okay…I promise.
Ok, on a more serious note, I do not like this song very much. Nothing to do with how country or not country it is, I just don’t think it’s good…in any genre.
And really, calm down about Sam Hunt. I agree he does not sound the least bit country, but he’s not THAT bad, my god. However, I don’t think he will have much staying power in the genre, so those of you who break out in a rash at the mention of him probably don’t have much to worry about.
January 2, 2017 @ 11:40 am
I agree with you 100%.
January 2, 2017 @ 11:47 am
Let’s say you love EDM & craft beer. You’ve gone to the same EDM club to enjoy the music & your favorite orange flavored beer for many years. One night you walk in & they’re blasting Iron Maiden & your fav beer is no longer available, replaced by Buds & PBR. The club manager who you have known for years walks up & says to you “we made some changes, whaddaya think?”
Your response would be….
January 2, 2017 @ 1:07 pm
“Thanks! I now realize what a fag I had been for all these years!”… Just kidding, it’s a good point
January 3, 2017 @ 5:53 pm
@Crsync: Now THAT’S an analogy that makes me think!!! Me being me? I’d definitely listen to Iron Maiden and listen to what else the DJ plays. Without my favorite beer on tap, I’d ask for something comparable. My big thing would be to see what type of crowd the new changes bring in. To give you my response, it would most likely be, “First round’s on me for the SCM crowd!”
January 2, 2017 @ 11:59 am
Tell us what you really think, Trigger. Ha, I agree. This is pure crap!
January 2, 2017 @ 1:47 pm
This guy certainly sounds wretched.
January 2, 2017 @ 2:07 pm
I didn’t even recognize him. Looks like he’s trying to cultivate on his face, what grows wild on my ass.
January 2, 2017 @ 2:34 pm
Isn’t this the stuff they play at maximum security prisons when the prisoners are rioting and rebelling? They play shit like this at maximum volume over and over (the guards have earplugs).until the prisoners are subdued. “We’ll go back to our cells. We’ll be good. Just don’t play anymore of that shit, please!” From now on, I think I’ll rate songs and singers by their “security potential” from 0 to maximum. Sam Hunt, however, is beyond maximum.
January 2, 2017 @ 3:59 pm
I really do not understand why so many people like this guy. His music is just like all that other country pop crap.
January 2, 2017 @ 6:42 pm
I didn’t listen but googled the lyrics
hahaha, it reads like a bad version of Adele
who does he think is interested in his weepy mash notes? he needs a shrink
January 2, 2017 @ 7:59 pm
It’s bad, but it’s not remotely the worst ever. You have a bad habit of assigning that title to a new song every few weeks to the point it’s completely meaningless when I read it in the title of any of your posts.
January 2, 2017 @ 11:12 pm
Like another commenter said above, the sarcasm and hyperbole seems to be going over an inordinate amount of people’s heads on this article.
January 3, 2017 @ 1:16 pm
I’m a regular reader and if this was meant to be somewhat tongue in cheek I can’t tell any real difference between it and one where you’re being completely serious.
January 3, 2017 @ 1:40 pm
Most anything posted in the “Down With Pop Country” category is going to involve sarcasm and hyperbole. Stuff posted in the “review” category will likely not. As a general rule.
January 2, 2017 @ 10:41 pm
I heard this song on my smartphone 3 hours ago and I made it 1 minute and turned the song off it was pure crap.
January 2, 2017 @ 11:11 pm
jeeze. i didn’t even realize a bunch of Sam Hunt dick-riders visit this site in the first place. Yall need to go back to your Tumblr blogs and Starbucks iced mochas. this Hunt’s name should never have been associated with country music in the first place.
On a positove side note, I have been discovering quite a few people who visit the barber shop i work at who are totally fed up with pop country. we can only listen to radio at the shop and any time i am working, i put on 99.7 Hank FM (out of Mustang, Oklahoma) and it has done my heart good to have quite a few guys in my barber chair who actually know “The Ride” by Coe, “Guitars, Cadillacs” from Yoakam, etc. Hank FM plays MOSTLY great country music. all classic. they have an app. where you can stream their station on your phone. i recommend this app.
Sorry i got a little off topic there.
Returning to the topic, Fuck Sam Hunt. Country or not, i can not listen to that idiotic crap without seeing red.
January 3, 2017 @ 3:13 am
If I’m Hannah Lee, I’m heading to the courthouse first thing this morning to apply for a restraining order against one Sam Hunt.
The “song” sucks, in large part because it is so creepy.
January 3, 2017 @ 12:08 pm
So you keep saying it’s hyperbole / sarcasm that this is the worst song ever but I think it might be. I’d love to hear a good R&B singer / critic criticize this. It is truly terrible. Terrible beat, terrible music, terrible lyrics. I believe (don’t know) that a true Drake fan would find this as offensive as we find Steven Tyler doing “country”. Sam Hunt remains the only “artist” i’ve had to walk out on twice (SX once cuz no amount of free booze could help me power thru his set to hear Bingham and Houndmouth and that IheartCountry junk at the Frank Irwin center which someone took me to post lonestar jam for free.) There are few people on Earth who sing as poorly as I do and Sam Hunt might be one of them.
January 3, 2017 @ 1:03 pm
I’m a huge Hunt fan always have been always will If yall really hate his music that much for the love of god don’t listen to it it really makes me mad how people like yall can walk around and speak your mind on stuff like it’s gospel but god forbid Hunt does the same if he wants to call his music country this is America he can do that to me love his music cuz it’s not one thing it’s always something different. Yall should really get off the Internet and go find some common sense and stop cry about what your tired of hearing turn off the radio then and read a book
January 3, 2017 @ 2:53 pm
It’s pretty simple, Sam Hunt IS NOT COUNTRY! Calling what he does music is even a bit far fetched, as it is mostly a myriad of shitty noise. And calling it Country is an insult to Country Music.
January 4, 2017 @ 12:41 pm
Please use periods and other punctuation now and then. Also, you should perhaps enable the “spell check” function of whatever program you are writing with.
Then again, I shouldn’t expect a Sam Hunt fan to be hip to punctuation and grammar.
January 3, 2017 @ 4:09 pm
Oh please im pretty sure “Country Music” has no feelings so its you thats really insulted for no reason other then you dont like the guy. I think thats most of the people that bitch about his music. im the type of person if i dont like something i say i dont like it and be done with it hell if it aint hurting me… but yall get online and talk trash about what yall dont like. clearly yall werent raised right… bottom line its his music he can call it what he wants i hate to see this Trash at the top of the list when i google search his song followed by a sea of morons that wanna egg on a neanderthal in his “Opinion” that no one asked for if you aint got nothing nice to say just shut up life lesson guys. your clearly still in high school cyber bulling someone
January 3, 2017 @ 7:14 pm
To The Regular Posters: a lot of yall l said it would be better once our brand of music started moving towards the mainstream. I kinda fought this notion, more for selfish reasons than legitimate ones. But I did have one good reason: what happens when all the little twigs and leaves that blow wherever the current wind takes them end up in our yard? Reading over this comment thread, I can see that is the case now.
Most of the people who post here normally are able to convey their message clearly and intelligently. Even when they insult me, they do it while balancing principles and individualism. If they say something they won’t break it, not even to talk shit.
But here, in this section, I can spot those leaves and twigs that never fought against the wind or swam upcurrent. They are semi reformed pop country fans!! Those guys that only speak in movie quotes, blindly defend flaming bags of dog shit as art, and in the next couple months will invade this sites comments section. (Especially if by miracle sturgill wins grammy)Probably good for SCM, and trigger, though annoying. But for me this just limits even more the few places I had to escape to.
So to those little leaves and twigs, floating down into my yard, we see each and every ignorant, obedient one of you. Raking up the yard and taking out the trash is kind of our thing.
Apologize for the arrogance.
January 3, 2017 @ 7:38 pm
Most of the people defending Sam Hunt in this thread are not regular Saving Country Music readers, they were directed here via social network, including via mainstream songwriter Jason Hein. They have never been here before, and only know Saving Country Music for attacking Sam Hunt. What I’m kind of surprised by are the regular readers who took this as some sort of serious straight-laced review when it was clearly not meant to be. But maybe that’s more of an indictment of my writing on this article than them.
January 3, 2017 @ 8:09 pm
Your sarcasm falls flat when your words are poignant and true. We just thought you were on the warpath again.
January 4, 2017 @ 5:31 am
With any luck perhaps some of these Hunt defenders will have a look through the SCM site and see that a whole other world of Country music exists outside of the shit that is played on the radio today. It’s bound to blow some fucking minds……..
January 3, 2017 @ 9:05 pm
I actually did not get that it was sarcasm either. So I’ll write my original thoughts.
1) This song definitely is not country, whether it’s good or bad. I’m in agreement that Sam Hunt should go the Taylor Swift route.
2) The production is neither here nor there for me. It’s definitely not country. I’ve heard better r&b/hip hop production, but it’s not country.
3) I actually think the songwriting is great, fantastic actually. It’s authentic and real and interesting.
4) His performance on this song sucks. Tbe writing- great. His emotion, phrasing vocals and expression- horrible, horrible, horrible. He sounds WAY too happy for this song, too arrogant, WAY too cool for this sad song he wrote. He has zero connection to the song and it’s really annoying how he sounds like he’s in his ego.
January 4, 2017 @ 1:50 am
” I actually think the songwriting is great, fantastic actually. It’s authentic and real and interesting.”
Orgirl…….would you post 3 songs that you’d consider among some of your favourite songwriting .
I’m curious about where this one might fall in that group .,,,thanks
January 4, 2017 @ 11:43 am
albert- you sound condescending and I do not feel like responding.
January 4, 2017 @ 7:23 pm
I can see understand how that sounded condescending , Orgirl .I was genuinely curious about other country songs that you considered lyrically good so that I could understand your opinion of the Sam Hunt song . I think its generally accepted that MOST , not all , mainstream country radio songs are NOT well written so I wondered if you were comparing the Sam Hunt song to any classic ( traditional ) country music …or to contemporary country or pop music ( Rhianna , Taylor Swift , Bieber etc.. ). I’ve already posted my thoughts on the song above and as you yourself observed , it is not country and your reference to his ‘ connection ‘ to the lyric is dead on , in my opinion . However I was baffled by how you considered this a good lyric wondered what I was missing .
January 8, 2017 @ 9:44 pm
albert- sorry it’s taken me a few days to get back to you and respond.
Okay, first off-
1) I’m not a fan of his hybrid of pop country/trad. country and hip/hop. I reeaaaalllly do not like the singing /talking thing. I grew up listening to all kinds of music- pop, classical country, pop country, r and b, hip hop. I am baffled myself that this younger generation (I guess I’m an old fogey now) likes his melding of talking and singing. To me it’s jarring. I actually like his songs (except for House Party) but not the talking/singing. Ugh. Break up in a small town would be great with no talking, singing only.
2)I don’t consider this a country song. It has sone country influences, but it is not a country song. I will be as annoyed as anyone if it’s released to country. If anything it reminds me of John Legend’s songwriting, or Ed Sheerhan. Or Taylor Swift, also.
3) I stand by my original statement that it is a great song. Check out Angie Keilhauer’s cover of it on youtube. Awesome cover. Let me know your thoughts.

Orgirl …. had a listen . LOVE Angie’s voice but I’m sorry , this is lyrically not a good song in my humble opinion .
This is a one-sided conversation which could easily have been spoken . There is no strong melody …no dynamic and nothing for a real singer to wrap their vocals around to make us -the listeners-FEEL something . It is very Sam-centric …there is no flow due to inept phrasing and it lacks a strongf hook .. .lyrically or musically . But most importantly , it lacks universality and a timelessness….the most important aspects of a GREAT song . Certainly I can see that it may be relate able by a small percentage of a young demographic …but that isn’t going to give this particular song legs or a life after Sam . I would argue strongly that it is , in fact , mostly Sam himself who draws any attention to this song due to his fan following . And yes ….I’d agree that lyrically it is indeed reminiscent of Sheeran or Ms Swift’s music ( which should tell you how I feel about THEIR lyrics also ) .However it’s nowhere near as a well crafted or melodically strong/hooky . Just my opinion , of course , FWIW .

What is with the weird pause in the middle and the outrow?

Total garbage! Thank you SCM for blasting this crap out of country music. You want REAL music? Listen to Cody Jinks, Ryan Beaver, William Clark Green, Joshua Scott Jones or Aaron Lewis. It’s bad enough we are settling for Sturgill’s new album considering his last 2 were fantastic. Open your ears, people…Sam sucks!!

I got bored with the replies, so I never finished, but I’m leaving one anyway. I think Sam Hunt has a great voice. This isn’t his best track, but it’s not terrible.
Most kids in the south listen to a mix of country artists and hip hip artists, so someone blending the two shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Country music doesn’t need to be dueling banjos to evoke the country spirit. He’ll probably never leave country behind completely, because that’s in his soul and in his songwriting, but I’m glad there are artists that don’t play it safe by emulating other, older artists. There’s room for everything. It’s ok to not like his style, but people who become angered when “country” and “Sam Hunt” are used in the same sentence are just narrow-minded. Any non-country listener would hear him and categorize him as country. At least country-ish.

“Any non-country listener would hear him and categorize him as country. At least country-ish.” Great, I’m glad we’re leaving it to non-country listeners to define what is and isn’t country, that makes perfect sense, doesn’t it?

Well, of course they don’t know what they’re talking about, so I’m not saying they should define what it is. I’m just saying that only true country music connoisseurs would say they can’t hear the country influence that non-country listeners hear.
It’s a weird animosity to insult a singer/songwriter because the genre doesn’t feel well enough defined.
I hope more artists blend styles because it’s what they like, not just to make money, and not to appease anyone else.

This isn’t the worst song ever, if only because it’s genuinely hilariously bad. I actually got through the whole thing because I couldn’t stop laughing at how terrible it is, as opposed to some of his other shit which is painfully bad.

Sam is one of the most talented singers of all time. This song is not great, but its not supposed to be, is it? He just trying to deliver a message. Don’t ever judge an artist by one song.

Then again ” Drinkin’ ” Too Much” is a masterpiece compared to “Body Like A Backroad!!!!!!”

I know Sam personally & all these hater filled comments are hilarious. I’ll keep this short & sweet by saying, keep hating bc you’re only helping pad his stats/views. After all, he’s the one making millions. The rest of you are playing keyboard ninja in your mother’s basement. Suck it sleazy, haters!
