Sturgill Simpson Sets Residency at New York’s Webster Hall

This story has been updated.
Along with his eight appearances on Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour throughout September, and a stop at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina on September 16th, Sturgill Simpson has set a five-night residency at Webster Hall in New York City for this fall between September 28th to October 2nd.
Promoted as “Five Heated Nights in NYC” with the gig poster portraying “Dick Daddy’s Spicy Picante Sauce, made in NYC,” it most certainly will be a hot ticket when they go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 9th. The marketing here appears to be a play off the old Pace Picante Sauce commercials where a bunch of cowboys are sent apoplectic when they’re told their Picante sauce is made in New York City. “Get a rope,” was the catch phrase that became part of the zeitgeist from the 80’s commercial.

This begins to round out Sturgill Simpson’s fall touring schedule, but what some Simpson fans are wondering is just what they can expect from these live shows. Sturgill’s last two records Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 were reincarnations of songs from his back catalog done bluegrass style, and at one point Simpson assured “We’ll definitely tour with the bluegrass.”
However, despite numerous queries from Saving Country Music headquarters, it has not been officially confirmed or announced if these Sturgill Simpson appearances either in NYC or on the Outlaw Fest tour will involve the bluegrass band, or be more a straightforward Sturgill show. However, the Merlefest folks have assured it will be Sturgrass when he takes the stage there, and numerous other indications seem to point to both the Outlaw Fest shows and the Webster Hall residency featuring Sturgill’s bluegrass band. More info once it’s been confirmed.
Of course Simpson’s last tour was truncated by the pandemic, and featured Sturgill mostly rockin’ out to the music of his last original studio album Sound & Fury from 2019 with Tyler Childers opening on an arena tour.
Tickets go on sale Friday, July 9th at 10 a.m. Eastern with presale starting Wednesday (7/7).

July 7, 2021 @ 6:11 am
oh thank god 9/11 only happened in a yankee shit hole. patriotism. maga.
July 8, 2021 @ 3:27 pm
As opposed to whatever shit hole you live in?
July 7, 2021 @ 6:17 am
New York. Yeah. That is where he belongs.
July 8, 2021 @ 3:26 pm
Meaning what exactly? Everyone plays NYC.
July 7, 2021 @ 7:12 am
Except for the NOLA person, do the rest of the above commenters dislike Simpson’s music, disagree that he’s quite talented regardless of your thoughts on his music, dislike his perceived politics, or some combination of the three? I’d love to catch all 5 NYC shows.
The concert we saw before it all locked down was Simpson and Childers in Atlanta. Seriously considering taking a couple of days off work to see the Outlaw Music Festival show in ATL. That date is a phenomenal lineup. I’d definitely like to hear the bluegrass versions live, but any Sturgill would do. Our first show since March 2020 will be Sleater-Kinney and Wilco in Atlanta in August. Then Squeeze in Jacksonville the night before ATL Outlaw Fest. Already taking Friday off so why not Wednesday and Thursday! Tampa specifically, and Florida in general, miss lots of acts.

sturgill hurt their little feelings because of his perceived public personality and because he isn’t country enough anymore. it doesn’t matter that anyone that knows him seems to love him – even people that are *still* touted around here. it doesn’t matter that they have lead charitable efforts to help musicians and areas affected by a number of things. there certainly is a political angle, although most won’t admit it. it’s pretty obvious though. why is new york hated? because it’s where all the ‘libtards’ live, obviously. the most hated people around here all have this in commo. people love their first few efforts, they become outspoken about something political, the scm hive turns against them. all of a sudden the music isn’t good anymore, they never liked the guy, etc. it would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.

I don’t care what the singer’s political affiliation is as long as the music is good.
Judging by your past comments as well as this one, I’m willing to bet you would turn on a singer you like if you found out he/she was a Republican.

i’m actually the type of person that can separate the art from the artist. i’ve also never referred to the south or other traditionally conservative places as shitholes and hoped all the conservative artists only lived and played in those cities — unlike some commenters here who clearly cannot make that distinction (please see above), which was one of my points.

First, if you’re reacting to the comment of “18 Dales and a Dozen comments,” you’ve been trolled. He’s a troll.
Second, if you’re reacting to Sturgill Simpson playing New York City, you’ve also been trolled. Sturgill was one step ahead of you. He knew some would freak out, hence the picante sauce bit on the poster.
There could be multiple reasons Sturgill chose Webster Hall for this. Maybe this is just a residency to start off a much bigger tour: something he’s done beofore. Maybe the only way he could field a bluegrass band as he wanted was to do it in one place, and the New York market makes the most sense. I wouldn’t try to read any more into it than “Sturgill Simpson is playing five nights at New York’s Webster Hall.”

18 dales may be a troll but a lot of people seem to share the same sentiment around here. thirteen at the time of writing this. oh and we can’t forget about wayne.
July 7, 2021 @ 1:01 pm
No troll here. I have written songs (one published) and play three instruments. I was an early supporter of Sturgill, but now can’t get passed the man for the music. It is my fault and probably shouldn’t be, but I am at least honest about it. Been doing this for 30 years, so I am no novice or basement-dwelling rug-rat with no future.
Own a business and am an adjunct prfessor at a large private university. It might surprise some the background of some of us “trolls”.
Regardless, I only blame myself for taking this view of Sturgill. Like I said, it should not be that way, but it is, at least for him.
July 7, 2021 @ 9:57 am
This is your site, therefore it is none of my business, but if he’s a troll, why not block him?
July 7, 2021 @ 12:10 pm
I’m an artist. Not a troll. And you’re every bit as complicit as I am, Trigg, in every single Lil Dale post because you’re the one that moderates them, including altering comments of mine on several occasions. We make a great team.

No artist would ever call NYC a shit hole. No one with half a brain would say such an idiotic thing like that.
July 7, 2021 @ 7:59 am
I would like to attend, but the location being NYC is a non-starter. The thought process in choosing NYC would be very interesting to know.
July 7, 2021 @ 8:13 am
i’m sure the thought process is nyc is the biggest city in the u.s. and that’s about it.
July 7, 2021 @ 9:12 am
Conservatives and liberals that don’t listen to music because of a artists views is just a sign of emotional immaturity. I hope this country can grow back up and handle music like David Allan Coe, Merle Haggard, Tyler Childers and Sturgill Simpson again without crying about which corrupt politician the artist doesn’t like. The politicians are against all of us and play us against each other. If you support a “Presidential Candidate” to the point that you have to believe 100% of what they say and do what they say you are in cult. Listen to the music and stop worrying about what else they do. I am here to find new music, you should try it as well. I love country music, some of you seem to like only drama.

Big fan of Sturgill here up in New York. Definitely going to catch a show or two.
