Toby Keith’s ‘Red Solo Cup’ = Bo Phillips’ ‘Blue Dixie Cup’
Every once in a while a song comes along in country music that really inspires you…
…and then there’s Toby Keith’s toast to the onset of idiocracy, “Red Solo Cup”. But believe it or not, the song did inspire Red Dirt’s Bo Phillips, brother of Stoney LaRue, whose video of a “Red Solo Cup” parody called “Blue Dixie Cup” recorded live at the legendary Gruene Hall in Texas is quickly making the internet rounds.
“First of all, to be clear; I don’t hate Toby Keith. In fact I really loved is old stuff.” says Bo, who like Toby, is from Oklahoma. “‘The Blue Moon’ album was frickin’ greatness. But I’m not a big fan of his, nor just about anyone else’s new stuff. In fact, I don’t even hugely dislike ‘Red Solo Cup’, it’s a fun song, meant for parties and funny live performances. But an international sensation? I dunno about that. It’s been painted everywhere, and I saw a ton of feedback on Facebook about how much people hated that song. So I literally sat down for 10 minutes and wrote ‘Blue Dixie Cup’.
“Not intended as a dig at Toby, or anything like that, but merely a fun parody song. I guess I’m saying in this song, what thousands of people are saying about it, as well as other “country” music. It’s gotten so damn commercial and mass-produced that people listen to it not because it’s a choice, but rather a lack of options.“
Bo Phillips’ talents run deeper than a silly parody song, and more info about him and his music can be found at www.bophillipsband.com.

Now I ain’t sayin’ there’s anything wrong
if a fella wants to sit down and write him a song
about a drinking container made in Hong Kong
and sold at a five and dime.
But the thing that really irritates me
is that people are just too damn blind to see
and my songs will never end up on Glee
as a cheap two-dollar rhyme.
Blue Dixie cup, I just threw up
Good music, hardly… Good music hardly
I hate you Blue Dixie Cup, shut the hell up
That song’s retarded, that song’s retarded
Now you fit things not in my pocket
Maybe a chain or sometimes a locket
If you’re a chick, a big cotton-rocket.
I know, but don’t ask me how.
And I like the way that you can be seen
making folks fall and some people lean
at least you were stolen Robert Earl Keen
So how do you like me now?
Blue Dixie cup, I just threw up
Good music, hardly… Good music hardly
I hate you Blue Dixie Cup, shut the hell up
That song’s retarded, that song’s retarded
They oughta put that guy in the pokey
I’ve never heard a song in the world so damn hokey
Damn I expected more from an Okie
My apologies to y’all.
Little blue friend, you’re more than amazing
The reason for years of fraternity hazing
and don’t you know that them guns will be blazing
when the CMA’s finally call.
Blue Dixie cup, I just threw up
Good music, hardly… Good music hardly
I hate you Blue Dixie Cup, shut the hell up
That song’s retarded, that song’s retarded
Blue Dixie cup, I just threw up
Good music, hardly… Good music hardly
I hate you Blue Dixie Cup, shut the hell up
That song’s retarded, that song’s retarded

I think it’s cool that Stoney LaRue gets some love, we’re from the same turdhole little town of Paris, Texas…7 12’s is about workin’ shutdowns at the Kimberly-Clark plant.

I heard Red Solo Cup playing from the radio and Toby censored it and changed “testicles” to “vegetables”.

Keith ripped off The Road Goes on Forever. Keen wrote the song The Road Goes on and On in response.
