Tyler Childers Comes Roaring Through Texas On Current Tour
Saving Country Music’s reigning Album of the Year winner Tyler Childers stopped by the historic John T. Floore’s Country Store on Saturday, July 21st in Helotes, Texas to entertain a packed audience amid his current North American tour. Tyler has seen swelling crowds coast to coast, speaking to the young Kentuckian’s rising status in independent country, and the turnout in Helotes was no different.
Opening the show was the Lexington, Kentucky bluegrass band and close friends to Tyler, The Wooks. Consisting of lead guitar player CJ Cain, guitarist Arthur Hancock, mandolin player Harry Clark, Roddy Puckett on bass, and George Wagman on banjo, they’re old buddies from the Bluegrass State that bring a bit of a fireside jam band aspect to old time string music.
Then Childers took the stage about 10:15 and played all the way to 20 minutes past the usual Floore’s curfew of midnight. Fiddle player Jesse Wells of The Wooks also plays fiddle and guitar in Tyler’s band, and happened to be celebrating his 40th birthday Saturday night. Near the end of the set, the members of The Wooks and Tyler’s band brought out a couple of pies with candles for Jesse to blow out. The show ended with Tyler and Jesse Wells playing a song together by themselves.
Tyler also played sold-out shows in Dallas and Austin during his Texas trek, and will be playing some major festivals through the end of the summer, including The Newport Folk Festival, Floydfest, Lollapalooza in Chicago in early August, and the Hinterland Music Festival in Iowa.

No mention of that Epic version of Front Porch Song by the Wooks? It was obvious the dude idolized REK’s #2 Live Dinner album, which made it even cooler.
Great show, especially once they dialed the sound mix in. I loved how he started with his most popular song, and at least half the set was officially unreleased and new music… just saw that he’s coming back to Gruene Hall in December. I bet people learn the words to the bootleg stuff by then.

You can tell all those guys are having the time of their lives. Tyler’s bassist is fun to watch. I think I finally brought my wife into the country music fold after seeing these two acts last week. She bought a Wooks shirt and talked to the lead singer (CJ?). All the guys on this tour seem really down to earth and they’re all amazing artists. I like that the Wooks use electric bass and imo if they add a drummer they could really take off.

No Turnpike Troubadours?

You know what … I’m seeing them Labor Day weekend with Shooter Jennings and Chris Knight. We didn’t buy tickets until it was announced Chris Knight with full band. I’ve seen Knight solo a half dozen times, so with a band was the draw. However, I’ll stick around (a little bit) for Turnpike.

Thinking about going to see that show. I live in Tuscaloosa, AL and saw the Troubadours down here this past spring. Great show. Have seen Knight solo and with the band but those were a while back. Have to say I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone who seems to be having less fun on a stage than Knight, but the songs are fantastic. Tyler is playing the same venue on Aug 18. GA tix still available for $15.50. It’s about a 5 hour driver but I’m seriously thinking about that, too.

Do it! Did you look at the venue. Very small. I live in Pittsburgh now, but went to high school in Hopkinsville. That’s about 50 minutes from the venue. It’s kind of a home show for Knight.
I have two hilarious stories about Knight and pics with him that back up your “no fun” observation…. but I love the man.

I think he said “country”, trigg. : ). Although, I guess Stapleton and Isbell were on the list, so that does widen the field away from country quite a bit.

Luke Bell’s face needs to be placed on milk cartons. At this point, I accidentally give Pat Reedy credit for his songs.

Great shots Trigg. I’ve seen Tyler 4 times now and he and the boys never disappoint. One thing that is getting increasingly annoying though, is the crowd feeling the need to sing every lyric at the top of their lungs. To the point where you can barely hear Tyler on many songs. It’s cool that his lyrics connect with people on that level, but let’s hear the man sing live and leave the personal singing for the shower and your car.

There’s a bad dynamic happening at his shows … new fans vs. old fans.

I saw him in Lexington recently and to me that was one of highlights, everyone there knew every word. Granted a lot of people here have been listening to Tyler a lot longer than the rest of the world, but it was still a cool aspect. It was probably the best show I’ve seen Tyler do. Plus he had naked pics of Bea Arthur put into his rider which was hilarious

That’s annoying but what’s worse is when folks have conversations during a show. I find it one of the most disrespectful things someone can do to an artist. (and the audience)

Agree Tara. That has also been a particular problem at his shows (as it is with others these days), and I think he’s actually called people out before for doing it. Lots of talk about the topic on his FB fanclub page.

Glad he does. More artists should. Although, as the audience grows, it’s probably hard to control it. I’ve been to shows where I’ve actually told people to be quiet. That went over like a lead balloon.

My biggest pet peeve is people deciding to record the entire concert on their phone in front of you. Nothing I love more than a sea of people kn front of watching the concert through their phone
