Willie Nelson Cancels Most Indoor Concerts Indefinitely

This story has been updated.
Willie Nelson will turn 89-years-old on April 29th, and will release his latest record A Beautiful Time on that date as well. But you won’t be seeing Willie Nelson in many indoor venues moving forward in 2022. Announced on Monday (2-14), Willie Nelson has cancelled all but a few indoor shows, and Willie’s camp has also let it be known that he will only be playing outdoor shows for the foreseeable future.
The change affects multiple upcoming dates, including the CMA Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame on March 10th and 11th in Nashville, a sold out date at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth on March 19th, the Peoria Civic Center Theater on April 20th, the Silver Creek Event Center date on April 22nd in New Buffalo, Michigan, and April 25th in Nashville, Indiana at the Brown County Music Center.
However, a few dates that could still be considered indoor concerts have yet to officially be cancelled, including the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans on March 13th, the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio March 21st and 22nd, and the Moody Center in Austin April 29th and 30th with George Strait and the Randy Rogers Band.
Find a full list of Willie Nelson’s updated tour dates below, including multiple dates with Zach Bryan and Charley Crockett opening shows.
Though no specific reason has been given for the move, it could be a combination of the overwhelming consensus among health officials that outdoor transmission of COVID-19 is very rare and outdoor settings are a much safer environment for congregation, and with Willie’s long history of breathing problems, outdoor venues might be the safest and easiest environment for the 88-year-old to play.
UPDATE: On Monday afternoon, the publicist for Willie Nelson clarified, “We are canceling our indoor headline shows until the COVID situation improves, as the safety of the audience and Willie and his touring personnel are of the utmost importance. When we are able, we will look to make up shows when possible.”
Willie Nelson has canceled numerous shows over the last few years due to illness and breathing problems, and has recently been performing while sitting down for the first time in his career. He is not currently known to be suffering from any illness, and the move could just be precautionary.
Under those new stipulations, Willie Nelson has also booked a new outdoor show on April 22nd in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, with Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors and Peytan Porter opening. Willie Nelson is also expected to play his annual Luck Reunion at his ranch just outside of Austin on Thursday, March 17th as part of SXSW, but a lineup for the event has yet to be announced.

Willie Nelson is a national treasure. We need to keep him around a lot longer so this precautionary change in plans is essential to his well-being. Long live Willie!
February 17, 2022 @ 7:10 pm
Willie is like Keith Richards, the amount of their daily drug intake is more powerful than any coronavirus
February 18, 2022 @ 6:30 am
Ronald Elkins, How the hell do you compare Willie Nelson to Keith Richards? You are a complete idiot and have no clue what you are talking about. Shame on you for for leaving such an absolutely mean comment for all of the people that love him here and are losing an iconic hero to his health and old age. You must be a Luke Bryan fan….. someone who shoots off their mouth and hasn’t a clue what they are talking about. I won’t be so unkind here, but most people just called him an _______ for what he said about Willie Nelson. Boy, I would hate to be around someone like you, and I am sure glad I never will.
February 18, 2022 @ 2:05 pm
Good grief, lady, take a chill pill and calm down. He was making a joke and you seriously go on a crazy rant? I’m glad I don’t have to be around YOU. Do yourself and the poor people who do have to be around you and get some therapy! Geez!!!
February 20, 2022 @ 8:26 pm
Women like you are the reason men die sooner than women????????
February 20, 2022 @ 4:38 am
Cathy – try reading a few of Willie’s auto bios, he tried a lot of the drugs… by his own admission. It’s not a secret.
February 21, 2022 @ 1:53 pm
Why
April 28, 2022 @ 5:18 pm
I LOVE Willie Nelson❣️
February 14, 2022 @ 8:40 pm
As long as he stops doing Skechers commercials!
February 15, 2022 @ 4:51 pm
J, lol, Shetchers r comfy. I know, used to wear them. It was good to see & hear Willie, regardless of sales pitch. ✌????C
February 20, 2022 @ 4:39 am
My thought when I saw that was: it made me laugh… and the second thought was: I hope they paid him a silly amount of money to do it.
February 14, 2022 @ 9:17 pm
Whoever scheduled Willie to play to play 7 shows between 3/10 and 3/22 and another 7 shows between 4/20 and 4/30 is just trying to kill him, anyway.
February 16, 2022 @ 11:25 am
Whatever Willie wants and needs, Willie should have. We love Willie!!!!!!!!
February 14, 2022 @ 9:53 pm
Those CMA Theatre dates had already been postponed three times. I highly doubt any of these outdoor venues require proof of vaccination.
February 14, 2022 @ 11:04 pm
His breathing problems should show that smoking weed is not harmless like a lot of hippies think
February 15, 2022 @ 12:54 am
He’s 88. Show me a life better spent by a health nut. Ole Willie can smoke and toke all he wants. Also, because he looks so damn good in SKETCHERS, I might just get some. Looking forward to May in New Braunfels.
February 15, 2022 @ 7:23 am
He did several years ago. It was covered on this site.
February 15, 2022 @ 10:02 am
Willie Nelson is 89 and touring. If you think his health is broadly indicative of the medical impact of smoking weed, you would have to conclude smoking weed is the key to a long and healthy life.
February 15, 2022 @ 6:36 am
I remeber going to see Willie 25 years ago in Augusta Georgia, thinking to myself I better catch him now, because it’s hard telling how much longer he’ll be around. little did I know
February 16, 2022 @ 7:02 pm
I was at that show
February 15, 2022 @ 7:05 am
Great job Willie, think of the safety of the workers and the fans. Hope your health is still good. Cannot wait to get your new album.
February 15, 2022 @ 7:07 am
He should do a tour with Keith Richards!
February 16, 2022 @ 7:46 am
He performed with Keith Richards at a Merle Haggard tribute concert in Nashville. Keith was…not good.
February 15, 2022 @ 7:14 am
I bought four excellent tickets for Willie’s April 2020 show at the spectacular Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee. It was to be a family affair, including my adult children so that they could see Willie while they had a chance. I kept declining the refund on the tix as I was hopeful for a re-schedule. While it will be nice to get the $500 back, I would rather have been able to see the show, even delayed by 2+ years. I understand the decision and will just blame myself for not making this all happen at an earlier time. Cheers to Willie playing anywhere!
February 15, 2022 @ 8:31 pm
He’s playing a outdoor show in Chicago
February 16, 2022 @ 1:25 pm
Sarah, Do you know when?
February 17, 2022 @ 12:46 pm
August 4, Windy City Smokeout with Turnpike, Morgan Wade, and Zach Bryan
February 15, 2022 @ 7:47 am
Over the yrs I’ve seen willie 7 times, in TX, and spread across 3 midwestern states, and all the shows were outside, so I am surely okay with this decision. there was nothing like a very sunny spring day in suburban Dallas listening to Whiskey River and his other all time classics.
February 15, 2022 @ 8:10 am
Woops. Indiana was inside a stadium, so 6 out of 7.
February 15, 2022 @ 11:32 am
I’ve seen him three times–once with the Higwaymen at Nassau Coliseum, once with Family at Carnegie Hall, and once with the Highwaymen outdoors in Central Park.
I was always hoping to hear him sing his last hit–and a #1 hit, at that–a great song called “Nothing I Can Do About It Now,” written by Beth Nielsen Chapman, that came out right at the beginning of the Garth-Clint-AJ-B&D era in 1989. For some reason, I don’t think Willie ever worked that song into his act.
February 16, 2022 @ 1:18 pm
I was at Nassau C show also,1976 was it?
February 15, 2022 @ 11:19 am
I don’t believe in COVID, but I’m happy that Willie is making the choice that he feels is safest for himself and his “crew”.
February 15, 2022 @ 5:13 pm
Actually a sensible comment. I probably have pretty different opinions about Covid than you, but everyone should support Willie doing what he feels best.
One could be upset if state governments shit down shows, but no one should complain that an 88 year old is choosing not to play.
February 15, 2022 @ 7:07 pm
I was sort of kidding when I said I don’t “believe in COVID”, I more meant that I don’t believe in the heavy restrictions. But, like I said, I’m happy that Willie was able to make the choice that he and his team felt was best.
Even I will say, if anyone should be scared of COVID, it’s an 88-year old man.
February 16, 2022 @ 7:50 am
I can understand the conflict someone his age would feel about wanting to tour and please his fans, but also being in the most at-risk demographic for Covid. The issue that most have against Covid restrictions is the government removing people’s 1st amendment rights for the benefit of big pharmacy.
February 18, 2022 @ 7:49 am
You may want to re-evaluate your choice of news sources. Conspiracies do not constitute real “news” no matter how often or how loudly they repeat it.
And to be clear there is no 1st amendment right to infect others.
Good to see that Willie is making these changes out of an abundance of concern for his own health as well as his fans, Too bad that so many other performers don’t have that same perspective. God Bless Willie!
February 15, 2022 @ 12:10 pm
I don’t comment all that much here, and when I do, I generally try to stay positive. But, in this case, I’m gonna do a little Wheaties whizzing…
My wife is a big Willie fan, so we went to go see him around 10 years ago at a large outdoor show. He put on an awful show. He barely strummed his guitar, and he didn’t sing so much as ‘talked’ through the lyrics, when he could remember them. We were both very disappointed at the quality of show he put on. It was kind of a similar feeling to when you would turn on those couple of ‘Dick Clark NYE’ specials they put on after Dick Clark had suffered through a major stroke. I would’ve felt cheated if not for the overwhelming sense of pity I had for him. Now my wife actually has trouble listening to his music because it just conjures up memories of his performance that night. I have to doubt too that it’s gotten better as he’s approaching his 90th birthday. I hope we just caught him on a bad night and maybe he was in a bad place health-wise at the time. But my main thought though when I saw that Robert Earl Keen was going to stop touring after this year was ‘good for him, before he turns into Willie’.
If it brings you happiness to go see him in concert, then by all means don’t let me spoil your fun. Just make sure that you keep your expectations calibrated around the fact that he’ll be turning 90 soon, and most of us will be in the ground before we hit that particular milestone, well beyond our own primes.
February 15, 2022 @ 12:20 pm
I am from Austria and have seen Willie several times, last time 3 years ago in Florida and he NEVER put on a bad show so I guess you have just had bad luck seeing him on one of his rare bad days (dont we all have these every now and then?)
February 15, 2022 @ 1:06 pm
I saw him play last summer and I didn’t think he sounded very good. It’s just being honest to say it. It happens to most singers in old age.
February 15, 2022 @ 2:14 pm
I’ve seen Willie in concert 22 times (12 since 2015). I’ve never had a bad experience. It sometimes takes a couple songs for him to get warmed up vocally (especially if it’s chilly out), but that is expected.
Even on his off days though, he shreds Trigger. Willie can play that guitar in his sleep and will probably do so on his death bed. So your comment about him “barely strumming his guitar” … I don’t believe that.
February 15, 2022 @ 12:55 pm
Oh look at how not to be a certified jacka** about something maybe this sites savior should take advice but he probably thinks Willie is below such a interpreter of words such as himself
February 15, 2022 @ 2:45 pm
I trust Willie to make decisions for his own health and would rather he protect himself than take any chances. Perhaps this also thins down his schedule and makes it more manageable. I’ve only seen Willie once, at the Missouri State Fair about 15 years ago. It was one of the best, longest concerts I’ve ever attended-over 2.5 hours. While I’ll probably never see him in person again, I’ll always treasure the experience. His son, Lucas Nelson, with the Promise of the Real, also puts on an excellent show.
February 15, 2022 @ 3:01 pm
Smart man, Willie! When it comes to common sense, he has it all. I’ve seen him in person several times and he does the best concerts. I would not, however, to to see him at an indoor concert. Very smart man!
February 15, 2022 @ 5:04 pm
‘Willie For President’.
February 15, 2022 @ 11:42 pm
You rock Willie . Love you man.
February 16, 2022 @ 3:01 am
Willie don’t have to leave Texas to perform and sell tickets in large numbers. Texas takes care of Texans…. especially singing cowboys. He could pick 5 or 6 cities play 1 a week and the country music community will come from all over this country and other countries to see him babble incoherently and never strum a note….
My oh. My…he’s earned the right to do whatever he pleases In this world based on all the contributions as a song writer, performer, Outlaw movement member and ….oh yeah Farm Aid.
Y’all trying to coax him into retirement and away from the very thing that he loves as much as life its self. You gonna force him to retire? Really.
Last I checked Willie is self employed. ????
You make it to 89 then you can do whatever you want. That’s only 7 yrs older than our president and #1 highest bureaucrat Anthony Fauci.
Now there’s two 80 somethings who ought to be forced to take up the rocking chair.
Farm aid alone solusofikes
February 16, 2022 @ 4:09 am
Never saw Willie but Lukas Nelson, and his band p.o.t.r. kicks ass!
February 16, 2022 @ 6:46 am
WILLIE IS A LEGEND, HE’S ALMOST 89 WITH POOR HEALTH, I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY HE HAS DECIDED TO PLAY OUTDOOR VENUES, ALSO REMEMBER THAT WILLIE HAS A HUGE FOLLOWING WORLDWIDE, I AM ONE, GOOD LUCK, GOOD HEALTH, GOD BLESS WILLIE.
February 16, 2022 @ 7:42 am
I have seen Willie 32 times in concerts between 1978 and 2019. I would still go see him again if he comes back to CA but let’s consider his age. His tour schedule would be hard on someone half his age. I am blessed to have seen him in person this many times and talked with him many times. ❤️❤️
February 16, 2022 @ 8:23 am
I’ve been a critical care nurse for over 20 years and while it’s certainly your right not to believe in covid you need to understand I put very many people like you who didn’t believe in covid and body bags and send them to the morgue.
February 16, 2022 @ 8:56 am
Only got to see Willie One time 1981 Chattonoga One of the best ever.Took three people with me they didn’t stop talking about it for weeks.god bless willie
February 16, 2022 @ 11:51 am
I first seen Willie Nelson in Lincoln Nebraska at Farm Aid 3 I also saw him in Sioux City Iowa at the Hard Rock Casino. He was Great as usual. His drummer had a problem with the heat, Willie Nelson kept on with the show. His Drummer was okay. My favorite song I cover of Willie Nelson is Family Bible. I play the song almost every day. Everything I have heard from Willie Nelson is GREAT. HE IS MY FAVORITE RECORDING ARTIST AND PERFORER. MAY GOD BLESS WILLIE NELSON
February 18, 2022 @ 6:32 am
If you disagree with his politics, he will cancel
you. He’s far left.
February 18, 2022 @ 1:34 pm
I consider myself lucky to hang out with Willie and Ray Price I drove bus for Ray Price one of the high lite of my life
February 18, 2022 @ 10:56 pm
I had coffee and cakes with Willie and my band in Sydney Australia in the nineties after Highwaymen concert. My hero.
May 11, 2022 @ 4:58 pm
I first saw Willie in the mid to late 70’s in Greensboro NC; Emmy Lou opened for him most of the time. Awesome music.
I have seen BB King and Etta James while they were able to knock it out while standing up. I also saw them when they had to sit down to do a show not long nefore they died. Those shows were short an mostly sad.
Sorry to hear about Willie. He was a consummate entertainer.
May 14, 2022 @ 10:18 am
I saw Willie in Amarillo way back in about 1975. He and his band played a concert there with Kris Kristopherson. He had a reputation for going to the most popular country bar in town after his shows and taking over and closing up the joint afterwards. We went to the Country Sound, and sure enough! Before he started playing, he sat down like a normal person and was talking to everyone. I went over and asked for an autograph. All I had was a cocktail napkin, so he signed it and its still in my cedar chest today! Afterwards, he moved in for a little smooch, so I accepted and a friend took a picture. When the picture was developed, Kris Kristopherson was also standing there in the background! A treasured moment living in the cedar chest of time!
