Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday Celebration Coming to Television
Willie Nelson celebrated his 90th Birthday with two epic shows earlier this year at the Hollywood Bowl in California on April 29th and 30th. A massive list of performers was assembled to toast Willie including Billy Strings, Charley Crockett, Dwight Yoakam, Allison Russell, Chris Stapleton, George Strait, Jamey Johnson, Keith Richards, Kris Kristofferson, Miranda Lambert, Snoop Dogg, and Neil Young just to name a few.
Those who were in attendance walked away talking about how legendary the two-day event was. In October, Blackbird Presents and Legacy Recordings announced they will be releasing Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 Live At The Hollywood Bowl as a 2 CD+Blu-Ray set on December 15th. It will include 39 complete audio tracks, three hours of video performances, and a multi-page booklet. A 2 LP vinyl edition will also be available.
But if you don’t want to go through the trouble of acquiring a Blu-Ray to see the concert for yourself, or didn’t see it when it aired in select theaters in June, you’re in luck. On Sunday, December 17th, CBS will air a two-hour television special with select performances from the 2-day event. It is set to air at 8:30-10:30 PM, EASTERN. Check local listings for specific times in your area. It will also be streaming live on Paramount+, and be available on demand for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers.
Along with the previously-announced physical packages commemorating the two-day event, Legacy Recordings has also revealed the bonus tracks that will only be available through the digital edition of the release, expanding it to a total of 52 performances. This will include some of the songs folks were lamenting didn’t make it onto the physical release.
Physical copies of Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 Live are now available for pre-order. The full digital track list can be seen below.

He played. He has done several celebrations where he did not end up on the follow-up albums/vids etc. Probably something contractual he doesn’t like.

Surprised that Ray Wylie Hubbard wasn’t part of the show. He and Willie go all the way back.

Chuckled when I saw Keith Richards was his duet partner on Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever”!

Sounds good, although it’s not a Willie show if it doesn’t end with Willie taking everybody to church.

@schnelkc–This is a commercial venture. Willie may be 90, but they want to balance it with a lot of younger acts. Yeah, they have Kris, and Keith and Young and Booker T., who are also up there in age, but these are all nationally recognized musicians and entertainment figures. Ray Wylie is just not in that league.
The other old-timer who definitely could have been a part of this is Brenda Lee, who’s having her moment in the spotlight, right now!

Yep, I fully get it, the marketing appeal and name recognition isn’t there. But when you think about who is left from that “outlaw movement”, it’s really just Kris, Willie, and RWH and it would have been cool to see the 3 of them together.

Super rad that Lanois has a part. His guitar in The Maker on Teatro is insane great. I love what Tyler Childers has chosen to sing. Forget about the hits, these are the tunes that has made the deep Willie fans profoundly proud of him.

Supposedly Daniel Lanois will be working on another album with Willie in the coming months, if it hasn’t happened already.

That is great news. Lanois has made some classic albums with Willie, Emmy Lou and Dylan along with his work with U2, Peter Gabriel, Neil Young and Robbie Roberson.

It will be interesting to see who actually makes it to the CBS broadcast. Obviously all of the true old school legends and Stapleton will. The Lumineers probably will since it’s December and they played a Christmas song. But hopefully Billy Strings, Charley Crockett and Tyler Childers all make the cut. This is prime time network TV and that sort of exposure can only help. The Leon Bridges and Gary Clark Jr. duet seems like it would be a winner as well, so hopefully that makes the cut too.

I will be watching to check out Tom Bukovac “Uncle Larry” in the backing band. I am more interested in him than all the Billy Strings and Jack Johnsons put together.
