Here’s Your 2nd Chance to Celebrate Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday

Earlier this year, Willie Nelson celebrated his 90th Birthday with two epic shows at the Hollywood Bowl in California on April 29th and 30th. A massive list of performers was assembled to toast Willie including Billy Strings, Charley Crockett, Dwight Yoakam, Allison Russell, Chris Stapleton, George Strait, Jamey Johnson, Keith Richards, Kris Kristofferson, Miranda Lambert, Snoop Dogg, and Neil Young just to name a few.
Those who were in attendance walked away talking about how epic the two-day event was. Now we’ll all get to experience it as Blackbird Presents and Legacy Recordings is releasing Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 Live At The Hollywood Bowl as a 2 CD+Blu-Ray set on December 15th. It will include 39 complete audio tracks, three hours of video performances, and a multi-page booklet. A 2 LP vinyl edition will also be available. The set will be available digitally as well.
Some of the more notable selections from the set include George Strait and Willie singing “Pancho & Lefty” together, Willie singing “We Had It All” with Keith Richards, and Allison Russell & Norah Jones singing “Seven Spanish Angels.” Interestingly, Sturgill Simpson made a rare appearance during the event singing “I’d Have To Be Crazy,” but won’t appear on the release.

The live album comes during a busy year for Willie. He released his first ever bluegrass album (entitled Bluegrass) earlier this year. On October 31st, Willie Nelson will be releasing his latest book called Energy Follows Thought: The Stories Behind My Songs telling the stories behind 160 of his favorite songs from his catalog. Then on November 3rd, he will become the latest country artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Also on November 3rd, Legacy Recordings will be releasing a new career-spanning collection called Willie Nelson Greatest Hits with 25 select tracks from throughout his career. This will be the first Greatest Hits collection from Willie that will include more current songs from his catalog as well.
Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 Live is now available for pre-order.

Wow thats an epic event!
I got nervous though as I didn’t see Sheryl Crow listed, but there she was #16 on disc 2.
Curious, the only song I know of hers is “All I Wanna Do Is Have Some Fun”. How does one characterize her music, legacy, besides doing tribute and award shows?
I know you have a lot on your plate Trigger, but I never saw a review of Travis Tritt’s gospel album and wondered what you thought of it. I thought it was very well done.

Looking forward to listening! I enjoyed reading coverage and seeing pictures during the celebrations.

Who the hell has a CD or DVD player anymore?!? Useless release.

Are you trolling? A CD player? Lots, I mean lots of people are still buying CDs and get this for a shocker, people are also buying vinyl.

This conversation dovetails well with the Garth Brooks article also posted today. The difference between this and the Garth release is that this will still be available digitally for streaming/download, as well as on vinyl. The Garth release won’t. I also suspect a lot of Willie fans willing to buy a release like this probably do have a CD player and Blu-Ray player. They’re given that option. Otherwise they’ll just stream it. In Garth’s case, they can’t.

I still like to buy CDs for the liner notes in the booklet. I can’t find out who the musicians playing on the album are without them, plus I like the artwork and having the lyrics handy, though the font size is usually a challenge for these old eyes.

@TD–You’t think all of that info would be posted on the artist’s or record label’s website, but it’s amazing how poor those tend to be.

I do. I like to actually own my music/movies/books. I’ll never give up physical media.

Let’s hope Willie didn’t employ the same people that auto tuned Cowboy Rides away album to an awful mess.

TeleCountry, I would bet more Willie Nelson fans have CD and DVD players and cassette players and even 8track players than those who have gone total digital…

First thing I searched for was Sturgill name. Maybe he didn’t approve the song. BTW this is a really nice set list! Bunch of great artists.

Willie Happy 90th! It’s your neighbor Lori from Swanton that used to drive you home to Delta OH! Take care God Bless you an forever more Birthdays!
October 27, 2023 @ 9:16 am
One minor correction: it would be the third chance to celebrate since they released it to theaters in July!

What did Amos Lee do not to have his epic song El Camino sung with Willy Nelson? What’s the story behind such disrespect of one of America’s legends? It seems purposely left off. I love Jack Johnson and Sheryl Crow. And Willy didn’t write all the songs, Willy Got Me High wasn’t written by Willy. I see lots of record companies listed. Maybe El Camino isn’t a 90th birthday song and would add some seriousness to the celebration? Why the prejudice? How come he wasn’t invited to the birthday party too? Just leave one of the neighbor kids off the list? Would he eat all the cake, open all the presents? He was probably upset, it’s not nice to leave people out. Tsk tsk.
