Country Music Has a Morgan Wallen Problem. It’s a Complex One

Morgan Wallen is the biggest artist in all of music at the moment not named Taylor Swift. It’s not Beyoncé. It’s not Post Malone. It’s not Drake or Kendrick Lamar. It’s Morgan Wallen. And for better or worse, he is a country star. He’s also currently part of the biggest song in the world that will probably be the biggest hit of the summer, and perhaps the biggest hit of 2024, “I Had Some Help” with Post Malone.
But country music, Nashville, and the American public doesn’t exactly know what to do with this guy. After strings of incidents where Morgan Wallen has embarrassed himself and country music by proxy by getting arrested, by getting caught using the ‘N’ word, and recently getting charged with three felonies for hurling a chair off a three-story building, it’s hard to know what needs to happen with Morgan Wallen.
Last week, country music held its annual ACM Awards, though you may not have noticed since it was truncated to two hours and broadcast on Amazon Prime. At that time, “I Had Some Help” was already the biggest song in the world. Morgan Wallen was also up for major awards on the night, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year, and the coveted Entertainer of the Year.
But Morgan Wallen wasn’t even in attendance. When pop star Post Malone took the stage to sing “I Had Some Help” and his country duet partner was nowhere to be found on a country awards show, it helped illustrate just how confusing and confounding the question of what to do with Morgan Wallen has become.
As we’ve seen regularly surrounding these awards shows, Morgan Wallen’s fan base was incensed that the biggest star in country music walked away with nothing, and wasn’t even featured on the presentation. You see words like “bias” being used about Morgan Wallen’s lack of success at award shows. But that’s not exactly what’s happening here.
It’s Morgan Wallen’s own fault he continues to be passed over for some of country music’s biggest accolades. The Morgan Wallen chair throwing incident happened on April 7th—a week before final voting for the ACM Awards occurred. Wallen also threw his chances of winning, and probably performing on the evening over the balcony that night as well. It’s also important to point out that awards are not just for commercial recognition. Critical acclaim and character also weigh into these decisions.
Morgan Wallen fans and many others are also quick to forget that in 2023, Morgan Wallen won the ACM’s Male Vocalist of the Year. Maybe he deserved to win even more than that, but the ACMs and the greater country community signaled that they would accept Wallen back into the fold if he behaved. But he didn’t. Yet by booking Post Malone to sing “I Had Some Help” on the 2024 ACMs, they were calling to mind Morgan Wallen, and his massive impact on country music that can’t be swept under the rug.
Something similar happened on the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards in October of 2023. Morgan Wallen won all the evening’s major awards, including Artist of 2023, Album of 2023, and Concert Tour of 2023. Wallen was not in attendance because he was out on tour. But instead of accepting the awards via satellite, or handing them out in absentia, The People’s Choice Country Awards just ignored the biggest awards of the entire event, and acted like they didn’t exist on the telecast.
Earlier this year at the Stagecoach Festival in California, Morgan Wallen was the event’s pinnacle Sunday night headliner. Amazon had been broadcasting all the major performances via Prime all weekend. But when it came to Morgan Wallen’s set, it wasn’t available. According to Morgan Wallen’s camp, it’s because that footage was being held back for something else. But once again it called to mind how country music is trying to hide its biggest superstar at the moment, which puts country music in a precarious position at every turn.
Now on Tuesday evening, May 21st, the Nashville City Council struck down a request by the contractors for Morgan Wallen’s new bar on Lower Broadway at 107 4th Avenue North, right near the Ryman Auditorium. A proposed sign constituted an “aerial encroachment,” which meant the city council needed to give it specific approval. Wallen’s recent chair incident, as well as his ‘N’ word incident in 2021 were specifically cited by the city council in striking the request down. It was voted down in a rather stark 30 to 3 decision.
Morgan Wallen fans are crying foul once again and saying that it’s unfair. But once again, it’s Morgan Wallen’s own actions that have resulted in these decisions.
Most everyone believes in a path to forgiveness and reconciliation. But it’s not really any specific incident by Morgan Wallen that he needs to overcome. It’s the repeated offenses. Nobody was hurt in the Morgan Wallen chair incident. Wallen did not use the N-word in anger towards anybody, or towards a Black individual. He was simply repeating a phrase commonly used in hip-hop parlance. It still shouldn’t have been said, but the incident deserves context.
Nonetheless, it’s the cumulative over-and-over aspect of Morgan Wallen’s behavior that has made him such a pariah in many circles. What has also made him a pariah is the unfair and outright inaccurate characterizations of both the N-word incident, and the way both the media and activist organizations have portrayed it.
Nashville City Council member Brenda Gadd said in voting against the Morgan Wallen sign provision,
“Someone who continues to get second chances, I think the third party operator [of the bar], surely they don’t need any reminder about his racist comments, using the n-word, his pledge to the NAACP for funding and then him never fulfilling that commitment.”
The idea that Morgan Wallen did not pay a pledged $500,000 to Black advocacy organizations continues to be a false assertion, though widely prevalent. It was initially falsely reported by Rolling Stone, and continues to persist despite verified reporting to the contrary.
First, Morgan Wallen never pledged to give any money to the NAACP. It was songwriter Jason Isbell who pledged to give the additional profits he made off of Morgan Wallen’s version of his song “Cover Me Up” to the NAACP after the N-word incident. As Saving Country Music reported in February of 2022, Isbell did donate $53,000 to the NAACP.
Saving Country Music as well as USA Today and other media organizations also verified that Morgan Wallen had paid $400,000 of the $500,000 he’d pledged to Black organization at the time of the false Rolling Stone article. Wallen then fulfilled the final portion of the $500,000 pledge, donating $100,000 to the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville in January of 2022.
Nonetheless, amid the chair throwing incident, it’s still fair to ask if Morgan Wallen has truly changed his ways, or even if his label-appointed handlers can keep a handle on him. It’s likely the felony charges from the chair incident will be plead down to misdemenors, and Morgan will only have to pay a fine and fulfill community service, or minimal jail time. But what hangs over Morgan Wallen’s head like an “aerial encroachment” or a chair hurled off a balcony is, “What will it be next?”
As many Morgan Wallen fans love to point out, compared to the antics of country stars in the past, Wallen’s actions seem minimal, and his consequences punitive, at least within the music industry. Though the press loves to harp on the bad behavior of Wallen, it’s nothing compared to many of hip-hop’s biggest stars where murder, convicted felonies, and other infractions checker their past.
How can you compare Morgan Wallen to Chris Brown, who still is embraced by the music industry? How can you compare his actions to the actions of Diplo and Nelly, who’ve both been credibly accused of rape and other sexual assault by at least three women, and continue to be accepted in music, including in country?
There also must be an avenue for redemption for individuals. Jelly Roll is a convicted felon and served prison time, but it’s the redemption story that has made the career of Jelly Roll so lauded by the media and lauded by country music’s award shows.
Complicating the issue even more is unlike Morgan Wallen’s Bro-Country predecessors such as Florida Georgia Line, Sam Hunt, and Walker Hays, Wallen’s music itself has a complexity that doesn’t make him easy to pigeon hole, and is regarded by the public as less polarizing.
Though the propensity for true country music fans is to cast Morgan Wallen aside as pop, he also has many songs that would constitute traditional country. He covered Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up,” which speaks to some of the depth and complexity within his catalog. You also have some traditional country fans who otherwise wouldn’t ever touch Morgan Wallen’s music that sing his praises and act as apologists just because they want to “own the libs,” or don’t want to see Morgan Wallen become a victim of cancel culture.
What’s for sure is that Morgan Wallen the performer has in no way been injured by the many negative incidents. He’s America’s and country music’s bad boy for better or worse, always doing things that get him into trouble, but nothing reprehensible enough to ever do him in. It’s the idea that he is redeemable that makes him so intriguing to many, if not attractive.
The other irony about Morgan Wallen’s career is that there is no current or previous country music artists whose music has been more embraced by Black music fans and the hip-hop community. That’s one of the reasons he’s so popular, and his crossover success so robust. They know what Wallen said, and they know the context of it.
The reason the country music community continues to keep Wallen at arm’s length is the fear of being associated with racism. But this is more a concern coming from elitist and activist X/Twitter handles as opposed to the population at large.
Even if the country industry outright banished Morgan Wallen as some have agitated for, this is likely to only make him even more popular, and make his fans even more dedicated and apologetic towards him. Morgan Wallen can’t even appear on the Grand Ole Opry for fear it might stir controversy. And if country music’s institutions continue to act like he doesn’t exist, they continue to become less and less relevant to the general population.
Morgan Wallen is even more popular because the country music award shows refuse to crown him Entertainer of the Year. He’s championed even more by fans because the Nashville City Council votes 30 to 3 to refuse his bar sign. He’s become a folk hero who is standing up to the pearl-clutching priorities of elites and the powers that be, and winning.
As Morgan Wallen goes through this war with a demon on his one shoulder, and an angel on his other, so does country music. The industry is actively trying to distance from Morgan Wallen the man, while still embracing Morgan Wallen the music, if for no other reason than the music is currently making country music more popular than perhaps it’s ever been in history.
There are no easy answers here, unless Morgan Wallen actually grows up, becomes a man, and stops doing stupid shit. But we all know that’s unlikely. This is the reason the Nashville City Council refused his sign proposal.
May 22, 2024 @ 11:42 am
Judging by the comments of the city councilor, this would have been struck down even if he had been a model citizen since the “n-word incident”
May 23, 2024 @ 2:35 am
Ya there saying he’s the hottest star but not a single award from either the cma or the acm tells me something is rigged nobody voting for him bull shit I wouldn’t show up the these places either.
May 23, 2024 @ 7:25 am
They said the same about Johnny Cash, Waylon all the outlaws back then! Now they are legends!
May 23, 2024 @ 11:30 am
The biggest difference is that Johnny Cash, Waylon, and Merle all made authentic music. No Auto-tune. No formulaic, paint by numbers songs. They made the music that they wanted to make and told the mainstream Nashville Music Industry to go F itself.
Morgan Wallen is something completely different. He is a pop-star with a bad attitude. His focus is on working with Nashville to make the next big hit. There is nothing about him that is authentic.
May 23, 2024 @ 11:57 am
Simplistic take.
Waylon spent a decade beholden to the Nashville system before breaking away and Cash recorded whole albums of material devoted to achieving commercial appeal. All three (especially Cash and Waylon) also covered hit songs seeking easy sales as was the custom of the day.
Difference is, their music was generally good, though, Cash’s later output was uneven, but they courted commercial success.
May 23, 2024 @ 2:32 pm
If radio only played authentic country music with no POP, how many songs would you hear. I am all for country being country. I am not a Wallen Fanatic, but the majority of what you hear is pop.
May 23, 2024 @ 4:50 pm
@ Sonny Radio? This is the 21st century. Why listen to radio when the streaming platforms allow you to listen to anything you want?
On streaming, you can listen to “Shake the Frost.” Radio is filled with a bunch of Applebee’s-type songs.
May 23, 2024 @ 7:02 pm
ii know why people love him – because he dont give 2 f…s – because hes blue collar, because id act the same way, you can take us out and dress up but still a proud ass redneck at heart
May 23, 2024 @ 9:00 pm
And Hank Williams Sr. And Jr.
May 23, 2024 @ 7:30 pm
Go to a concert and you will think different. He was amazing. Love his music so not sure what you are talking about.
May 23, 2024 @ 9:20 pm
Honestly I can’t believe that he is being treated the way he is and to say he can’t sing or his music isn’t any good well they must need hearing aids the boy can sing .I remember watching him on The Voice he was a very polite and very good singer then. HELL PEOPLE CAN FORGIVE MICHAEL JACKSON FOR HANGING HIS CHILDREN OF THAT BALCONY!THEY FORGAVE THE ACCUSATIONS OF CHILD MOLESTATION AGAINST HIM AS WELL ,AND NOTHING YET HAS EVER REALLY BEEN SAID ABOUT THE BLAKE SHELTON AND GWEN STEPHANI THING WHEN HE HAS A WIFE .NOW THats not just wrong or a mistake that against the Bible its a sin not just a crime but you don’t see him being treated any sort of way .I mean I don’t agree with alot of things that famous people like music stars ,movie stars , most of our presidents ,senators,,or alot of public figures do and say, with that being said I don’t agree with alot of things people do or say around me friends family or neighbors ,but yall know what it’s not for me to judge anyone and it’s not for me to condem anyone for mistakes they have made in their life .In my opinion you can’t judge someone for what they have done in their lives hell No one knows what’s going on in his head or what problems he may be having or how he has been treated since the N word controversy. What people need to do is remember he is only human and we all make mistakes.Besides that to the country music association yall are supposed to be believers in the good book well how can you say that if your not living by it .Yall are probably the reason the boy is acting like he is ,I mean look at what the boy has done for country music ,how many younger people has he brought to that genre of music ,only to be treated like an outcast because of a poor word choice which the blacks never really held against him .I I think you owe that boy an apology and should give him every damn award that he should have won to begin with I mean dang I like jelly roll to but look at the life he has led he made many mistakes to but he was quickly accepted and already sang on the grand ole opery ,but oh my God Morgan Wallen said the N word and is shunned from there and has treated like a leper ever since they let him come back and has made song after song number 1 hits made country music a lot of money ,and that’ s fine cause they want that money but he can’t win awards for them or be on the grand Ole Opryland that’s really messed up .HOW CAN ANY ONE IN THE COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION THAT BELIEVE IN THE GOOD LORD THINK THAT THEY WONT BE JUDGED BY GOD WORSE THAN MORGAN WALLEN WILL ,AND DONT THEY KNOW TO BE FORGIVEN FOR YOUR SINS YOU HAVE TO GIVE FORGIVNESS AS WELL .THATS SO FREAKI. CRAZY THAT ALL THESE PEOPLE are on the hate Morgan WALLEN BANDWAGON WHEN HE IS ONLY HUMAN AND WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES EVERYDAY SOME ARE JUST BIGGER than others .Yall all ought to be ashamed of yourselfs for saying such mean hateful and bad things about the young man , but what do I know that’s just my opinion but I have the right to give it just like everyone else.
May 23, 2024 @ 9:20 pm
He’s had more nu.ber one hits in one year, than any other artist. He’s payed his dues, rolling stone magazine needs to know the facts before they bash him. The truth is what needs to be said. He’s a true country music legend already. Jealousy is all its about. And him using the N word is a joke.. Black rappers use it in every song.. Their not stopped from going to awards and made unable to get the awards they deserved. It’s wrong the way country music council are intentionally trying to ruin his career. He brought country music back alive!!! Give credit where it’s due!!! Stop judging him.Hes no P diddy!!! Give him a break!!
May 22, 2024 @ 11:53 am
Can someone explain his appeal? I’ve yet to hear a song of his I want to hear again. Popular ≠ good.
May 22, 2024 @ 12:29 pm
I think there is some level of thought or feeling that he’s “better than the rest of the crowd,” at least when it comes to his music. He’s better than Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean and the bro-country that preceded him. He’s better than Dan + Shay and he’s better than whatever it is Keith Urban has morphed into.
And yeah, I think he’s got a few decent songs that are worth listening to.
But if he weren’t being compared to the rest of the pack, so to speak, I don’t think he’d make much of a even a ripple. There’s enough about him that’s country that he can’t be lumped in with the worst of it but not enough that he’s going to be embraced by the Americana/Red-Dirt/Texas Country fans or traditionalists.
He’s not a trend-setter, but he’s also not a trend-follower. He’s not milqetoast but he’s not unique either. He’s someone that can be pointed to to say “yeah, country radio is improving.”
That’s my two cents anyway as to the appeal.
I’m not really a fan, even with all of the other shit aside, but I can at least see what people find somewhat appealing about the music.
May 22, 2024 @ 1:45 pm
This is pretty much how I feel about the matter. The natural tendency is to just lump him with the rest of the Bro-Country trash and call it a day, but that’s not really being honest about what’s happening here, and it runs the risk of misunderstanding or underestimating Wallen, which can be dangerous, especially if you’re a detractor.
If you go to his last album and listen to songs like “Born with a Beer in My Hand,” “Devil Don’t Know,” “’98 Braves,” and “Don’t Think Jesus,” it’s hard to say this guy isn’t talented. There’s also some absolute trash, but it’s trash that finds appeal with other people. He knows how to be all things to all people by releasing 36-song albums with something that will appeal to everyone.
May 23, 2024 @ 12:03 pm
So his music is better than a complete turd, but he is nowhere close to the level of Isbell, Childers, Sturgill, etc.?
Not exactly a ringing endorsement. I haven’t heard anything from Wallen that is worthwhile. But I’ll admit that anytime I hear a song with an auto-tuned vocal track, I quickly skip to next.
May 23, 2024 @ 1:03 pm
It wasn’t meant to be a ringing endorsement. It was meant to respond to the question of what people find appealing about him and I tried to answer with an objective opinion about what others find appealing.
May 23, 2024 @ 1:19 pm
I’m sorry if my prior comment came across as giving you a hard time. I think you and I are generally in agreement on Morgan Wallen. He may not be rock bottom, but his music isn’t very good.
May 22, 2024 @ 2:32 pm
He pulls off the tortured soul bad boy allure that women devour. He looks dangerous but his heart is oh so vulnerable. My social media feed is full of women from every viewpoint or economic class gushing over the guy.
“Sand in My Boots” is a legitimately great song. Most of his other songs are forgettable, but I suspect I am not his audience.
March 12, 2025 @ 11:19 am
Well guess what? I went through country music addictions. Then it hurt me inside and I tried to stay away from it and try to avoid it and I succeded only twice. I am done with all music. It’s all junk and a waste of time too. And also it has ruined my life partly and gave me horrible struggles in faith. I mean its decently good but bad in another type of sense. I kind of agree but my experience was not nessecary and it ruined part of my life.
Wanna know who I am? My name is Kurt, Im 18, 11th grader, type 1 diabetic, I had 3 seizures and also rode a moped in 2024 starting in MAY, 2024 for 5 or 6 months. I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA in CALUMET, MICHIGAN. I don’t have my license but I used to go to a school called Hancock Central High School up in Hancock, Michigan. I have a Red Chevy Silverado 1500 1994, ole red truck from my neighbor. I bought it for 1,000 of my own money and my dad paid 1,000 for the other half. I got it for a 2,000 dollar deal that I requested to my neighbor when he talked to me and asked me if I’d buy it. I can’t drive and I took a road test 3 times. I had a moped license from May 17, 2024 up to March 5, 2025 and I turned 18 last Wednesday. I can’t ride any vehichle or moped now cause my license expired on my birthday which was March 5, 2007 and now i turned 18 on March 5, 2025 and it’s March 12. I can’t drive like I said cause I had 3 seizures. That’s why I don’t drive. It’s meant to be though so I’m a little worried and a little excited to get it this coming Mid May. I may have to retake Michigan Drivers Education but that will improve my driving skills a lot. No harm meant but this is my life in listening to counrtry music and who i am
May 22, 2024 @ 2:54 pm
I think he’s an overrated and entitled punk who thinks the rules don’t apply to him. I wouldn’t walk across the street to see him.
May 23, 2024 @ 6:21 am
I’m with you. I don’t understand what people are thinking. As for biggest in country music right now. If he were I’d be singing his songs all day, don’t even know them and I listen to country music all day.
May 22, 2024 @ 6:11 pm
I can’t even name many of his songs, but Everything I Love is a jam and pretty damn country
May 23, 2024 @ 4:20 am
I think naming his big album “Dangerous” made the appeal obvious. It was a bit on the nose. Being a music bad boy is good marketing if you do it right. He’s the best of the bro-era but massively over rated by fans because his troubles make him “outlaw” to them. Getting “canceled” because one got caught stupidly trying to act like a real rapper while wasted isn’t a lot different than Ozzy accidentally biting the head off the bat or pissing on the Alamo because he was wasted. It raised a ruckus and thereby cemented a legendary cult status.
Of course to also point out another obvious thing it mirrors Donald.Trump’s political career in the manner.
May 23, 2024 @ 6:26 am
Well sorry that you don’t know great music and a great artist when you hear one . I am sure you are the fat ass Jelly Roll and his hoe wife biggest Fan though ????????♀️????
May 23, 2024 @ 9:01 pm
I’m with you on that! If you didn’t get Morgan from the beginning, you never will. He had me at Whiskey Glasses and I’m an ardent fan at 66 years old. I just love him.
May 23, 2024 @ 11:23 pm
I’m with u! I’m 62 and can’t get enough of the guy! He puts out incredible music, way more songs than on a usual album and a great variety of types of songs. On top of that he’s awfully cute! These award shows are ridiculous. I don’t know how some of them like that Jelly Roll can accept awards they know should have gone to Morgan.
May 23, 2024 @ 3:00 pm
Just because it’s not your cup of tea doesn’t mean it’s the same for everyone. I personally love all of his songs. Not one bad one. But once more, that’s my opinion and right to voice it. As far as the “N” word, why is it ok if the same people that get offended call each other that all the time and write songs about and think they’re cool? I’ll never understand that. That’s like me saying I’m offended if they call me Mexican but I’m not, I’m Spanish. I think if you walk around with a chip on your shoulder, then just the slightest touch, you’re going to cry because it’s so bolted down on your shoulders, then I’d be crying too.
May 24, 2024 @ 12:40 am
I would say that he does have some crossover appeal, Don’t know if it’s because of him, in my case it’s not, wouldn’t know who the hell he was without post Malone, not that I’m a post Malone fan but I do recognize his vocal talent.
Who writes these songs? Very likely not the entertainers these days, I don’t waste my time to find out, if my body feels it, then it’s good to me. I don’t give a crap what any of you think, I’m sure it’s mutual.
This article was written by someone with borderline personality disorder because they couldn’t stop loving and hating in the same damn sentence.
May 25, 2024 @ 4:45 pm
So sorry, but it is what it is. Morgan is an outstanding musician. He has an unique style. And his concerts says it all. He out does it all. He does not need any dust collecting trophies or plaques to prove anything. There have been many other’s that have done worse. Let’s get real with that already. Country Music should down right appreciate him. By the way I really enjoy his sound and have purchased his CDs. And I’m over 50.
May 22, 2024 @ 12:21 pm
I don’t listen to Wallen but it’s hard to complain about his antics at this point. That’ll change if they get seriously worse or if he physically hurts someone.
As you said, earlier country stars and today’s hip hop stars make Wallen look like an angel. It’s the same story for rock, blues and jazz greats.
It just might be a given attribute of American music.
May 23, 2024 @ 6:59 am
The man threw a metal chair off a rooftop.
He’s damn lucky no one got seriously injured, or worse.
May 23, 2024 @ 6:04 pm
Cool Lester smooth…punk name, fo’ sure. Never done anything.you regret?
May 22, 2024 @ 12:26 pm
Let’s be clear, Wallen isn’t some outcast fighting against the country music industry- he’s a Florida Georgia Line rehash that occasionally covers some songs with depth like “cover me up”. Now the industry responsible for making him what he is will turn its back on one of the largest money makers in music right now? Everything the industry does is manufactured for image and ultimately monetary gains- the industry will paint Wallen as a scorned bad boy if the gravy train keeps rolling.
May 22, 2024 @ 12:28 pm
Love him. I can’t think of any of my “not big fans of authority” friends that I would expect perfection from. Why judge him or his choices? He’s living a life I’ll never really understand. Love the music and support the human.
May 22, 2024 @ 12:32 pm
Let those without sin cast the first stone.
I couldn’t name one song by Wallen, but all the self-righteous nonsense and virtue signalling by others regarding the guy is bullshit. If it was me I’d tell city council to go fuck themselves. Wallen is no worse or better than any of the self-absorbed assholes who point out his actions while ignoring the garbage in their own lives.
Can you imagine if the real outlaws of country music (and no, I don’t consider Wallen an outlaw by any stretch; he’s just a young guy who’s having trouble dealing with fame) were just just getting started today? Cash, Waylon, etc. would be dead in the water. Imagine if Axl Rose (himself now one of the biggest virtue signalling tools on the planet) was just starting out?
As Trigger has pointed out many times, the industry, along with the media, is very selective when it comes to certain artists.
May 22, 2024 @ 5:26 pm
The city sure loves that revenue he brings in though; no matter how tainted it is I guess. I was there for his recent concert at the beginning of May. It was packed full all three nights with folks from young to old (53 years young myself). He’s a great showman. It was one of the best concerts that I’ve been to in a long time.
May 22, 2024 @ 6:06 pm
I was there too. Flew from Oregon to watch him. It was an awesome concert! People of all ages and male and female.
May 23, 2024 @ 8:01 am
Agreed. My daughter and I travelled to Tennessee from Australia last year because of how affectionately he talks about his whole state. The millions he would have boarding to the community from his three concert would’ve been absolutely massive for businesses. And this spa will do exactly the same
May 22, 2024 @ 12:39 pm
I can think of another American who does bad things and is still on course for success in November. I would like you to argue that a character like Wallen is anomalous, given who served as president between 2017 and 2021.
May 22, 2024 @ 2:35 pm
An interesting take considering the current president has made racial statements in the past and showered with his daughter.
May 22, 2024 @ 2:38 pm
Let’s please not get into Presidential politics here folks. This is a country music website.
Thanks!
May 22, 2024 @ 3:57 pm
A fair point well made, but it was to emphasise that some people are uncancellable. I think your essay, especally on Music Row not wanting to be tainted with racism, are very valid. I’d like to know why Big Loud, who have made LOTS of money from Wallen, are standing by him, and whether it helps Wallen that they are teaming up with Republic rather than have him be on one of the big Nashville labels.
May 22, 2024 @ 5:47 pm
funny how you made this comment Trigger only after a republican chimed in..
May 22, 2024 @ 12:59 pm
There is no complexity or depth to this guy’s music, it’s bro country that is every bit as bad as FGL or Luke Bryan.
May 22, 2024 @ 1:19 pm
Maybe it’s all part of his team’s marketing: make the entities look “bad” (ACMs, Stagecoach, Nashville City Council) to boost his profile.
It’s worked before.
May 22, 2024 @ 1:28 pm
I get his appeal and I see his talent. Lets start with talent. He writes his own music and music for other artists, plays piano, plays guitar…that’s for starters.
As for his bad boy reputation and his antics. All these artists that so many people rave about and complain that ” Country music just isn’t what it used to be…bring back Waylon, Merle, etc..” Well lets talk about those artist. Johnny Cash, arrested for drug smuggling. Johnny Paycheck, arrested for shooting a guy. Merle Haggard, spent 3 years in San Quentin. Hank Jr. was arrested for putting a woman in a chokehold. And Waylon was arrested by federal agents for conspiracy and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
So let’s talk about how terrible Morgan is…cuz it seems we’re forgetting the error of a lot of other Country artist’s ways.
The Nashville CC is a joke. They’re holding on to this “He said the N-word and we won’t ever forgive him” so we’re denying him his sign…but yet you have Kid Rock across the road with his bar and he just was in an interview pulling out a gun and using racial slurs. So let’s call it what it is…it is bias and it’s apparent even in this article.
Just remember this decision to deny his sign solely because they don’t like him is a slippery slope and not how a government entity should be operating.
May 22, 2024 @ 2:39 pm
To many modern Americans, Wallen’s saying a racial slur was worse than murder, kidnapping, and rape combined.
For them, there is no rehabilitation or forgiveness for Wallen.
Guys like Chris Brown, Diplo, and Nelly are more welcome in their world.
That is their mindset.
May 23, 2024 @ 7:02 am
The funny thing is, it’s actually not complicated:
Fuck Diplo.
Fuck Nelly.
Fuck Chris Brown.
Fuck R Kelly.
And fuck Morgan Wallen.
The fact that Chris Brown is worse doesn’t make someone who supports Wallen any less of a trashbag.
May 22, 2024 @ 10:45 pm
Well said! People tend to forget things that don’t help their case. At the end of the day Morgan along with all the other artists are human and will make mistakes. I happen to enjoy his music. The “N” word incident I agree seemed to be used not in a hateful hurtful way but a way like too many others have and still do. I don’t like that way of speaking but I watched a video of it and I don’t think he was using it to hurt anyone. The chair incident could have turned out very bad if he hurt someone. Luckily, he didn’t. I think he needs his fans prayers. I think he is worth praying for guidance and direction. Becoming famous as quickly as he has tends to be a real problem for many people. Actors, singers etc. He has a large fan base and sells out multi night concerts even when ticket prices are on average $500+ so he has something. His concerts are pretty impressive. Whatever talent he has it is obviously working for him. You can’t deny he has something that brought out over 77K fans both nights last weekend with fans singing his songs word for word and loving every minute of him. I just needed to get my opinion out bc I really don’t think he is this talentless person some call him. It’s just his time now and I hope he makes better choices and avoids doing foolish things. He has such a good thing I’d hate to see it end prematurely.
May 22, 2024 @ 2:19 pm
That’s all excuses george jones was a drunk shootings bus wreck missed shows passed out on the side of roads he won every award there was there’s a woke agenda that country trying to push Lainey is good but she’s not even close to morgan or Luke combs yet she’s winning award after award let’s not try to blow smoke up people’s butt the powers to be in country don’t like Morgan why would he show up he gets screwed every award event morgan should have won several entertainer of the year already his music is always at the top he sells out everywhere he goes
May 22, 2024 @ 3:03 pm
Popular doesn’t equal award worthy, plus entertainer should go to a positive influence on country and he most certainly isn’t
May 22, 2024 @ 10:54 pm
Bullshit ! Go vote for Laney Wilson. Her or Megan Mahoney are not even in the class of Morgan Wallen yet they popped up in the music scene and win award after award. Leave Morgan out of it, other artist who are better singers, writers, have a bigger following, have many number ones but they don’t even get recognized but some young blonde who thinks shes so pretty gets the award Morgan or several others should have got. Nashville sure as hell dont complain when the money that Wallen brings to the industry lines their pockets. Talk about racist, what they are doing to him is as wrong or worst than the fucking ” N” word. Black artist sing about it all the time and its cool but Morgan repeats something that was said, Nashville biased assholes would have him hung from a tree if they could get by with it. Who the hell do they think they are. We the people buy the concert tickets, albums, ect. We fill those stadiums night after night making him the most popular artist because we love his music, how else would just about every song he has put out goes straight to #1. Nashville can’t deny the facts and think they can just ignore him by not giving him an award and he will go away…that’s not going to happen. Maybe he should go “Pop”. Atleast they give credit where its due, let that industry get all that revenue that Morgan has brought to Country music. I know myself and millions of others would support him and his music no matter what genre its labeled as.
May 23, 2024 @ 2:59 am
My dislike for Morgan Wallen goes back to October 2020. His lax attitude and wreckless actions related to Covid-19 set a very poor example for his listening followers. Because of this, he was uninvited to perform on SNL!
His response at the time was to lay low for a bit; but no apology, ownership for his actions, or taking the opportunity to help educate his public on this issue. That seems to be how he’s still handling questionable actions.
May 23, 2024 @ 8:39 am
May I remind you that covid was over 4 years ago. Also…he’s young. He probably didn’t get a lot of guidance on keeping his head on straight when he started rising faster and faster. Essentially this guy exploded the country music scene and probably had very few people trying to correct him. They all want the money coming in.
I believe in grace, and it seems a lot of people lack grace, understanding, empathy and forgiveness these days.
May 24, 2024 @ 3:47 am
He is as good as it gets! He reminds me of Keith Whitley and George strait, Brooks and Dunn. Would love to see him in concert! And I agree with many. He should have won many awards already. And I even have used the word, nigger many times! It goes to every every race there is. Not just black folks. He has put out the best albums of all time.lve been around for 66 years and bought many a album. I love most all music. Hang in there Morgan you Podunk good old boy.love to meet you.
March 12, 2025 @ 11:45 am
True!! He does deserve it. That’s nice to show him respect and uphold him even though he has made a few mistakes. Guess what I’ve made mistakes more though. I learned from most though.
May 23, 2024 @ 6:27 am
I’m with you. I don’t understand what people are thinking. As for biggest in country music right now. If he were I’d be singing his songs all day, don’t even know them and I listen to country music all day.
May 23, 2024 @ 7:13 am
Punctuation is your friend. Try using some.
May 22, 2024 @ 2:55 pm
This article is not reporting facts, it is mostly one person’s views or opinions. Really was written horrible. Repetitive comments about him using the N word even though I myself find it to be the most ignorant word ppl say does not make a bad person. He is a singer/songwriter and like all human beings he makes mistakes. The news has become about people personal opinion. He still great at what he does and deserves his awards. The awards are all just a joke not based on music bought or played.. so no one takes them seriously anymore. Just a show…
May 22, 2024 @ 8:36 pm
Probably the best comment I have seen. And it’s a double standard. The rappers can use the N word in their songs plus other vulgar words and no one says a word. CC I’d just ridiculous. He deserves to be recognized
He’s a hello singer, writer
He just needs to grow up. He is not the and I’m sure he won’t be the last
May 22, 2024 @ 2:59 pm
A pretty good singer with some great songs and excellent production values and probably a real nice and civil guy…when he’s not drunk. I also think he’s a fine looking man and just might be looking very dapper soon in an orange jump suit off to the side of some roadway with a rake in his hands.
May 22, 2024 @ 3:03 pm
he was born too late. he woulda fit right in with The Who.
a chair? moonie woulda punched him in the brain, if he had one. be a man- throw a TV out the window! an old TV, not them new ones that weigh 2 pounds. a CRT!
seriously though, not cool. if that chair hits somebody, you’d never hear his name (or music) again.
he’s an idiot. as someone who would LOVE to have the audience for my music that he has, i’m pissed. give ME a shot at the title. asshole!!
May 23, 2024 @ 6:40 am
Guess you suck and your music. Dream on. You will never I say NEVER BE MORGAN WALLEN OR NO WHERE CLOSE . He is a very talented young man . Everyone has personal issues as he had the night at the bar . Getting upsetting news and he just acted like any other man would have or woman .
May 23, 2024 @ 7:15 am
No, normal people do not throw chairs off balconies.
May 28, 2024 @ 12:18 pm
thank you for your eloquent rebuttal. as far as this goes- “You will never I say NEVER BE MORGAN WALLEN OR NO WHERE CLOSE”….i sure hope not.
May 22, 2024 @ 3:28 pm
Country music is trying to bury
Morgan Wallen, it’s not going to work… Country Music elites should listen, and listen good, the people are what makes Country artist, we buy the tickets. We buy the music, if its what the people want, fucking listen to us. They tried banning Wallens music on the radio, that was ridiculous, everyone streams now, they banned him from award shows for awhile, but, anyone who won the most prestigious awards knew they would have been given to Wallen if he would have been nominated. So, who really lost! All of the artist who won awards in Wallens categories should have not accepted them, Laney Wilson, Jelly Roll, the list goes on. Country music elites should remember past Country artist who have had criminal past much worse than Morgan Wallens, Cash, Jones, The Hag, yall didn’t try and cancel those great artist, I will say, Morgan Wallen has brought all the negitive shit on to himself, and he’d probably say that is true, but, who the fuck are these people throwing stones, nobody’s perfect. Give the man, his due, if he has to face a judge, he’s a stand up guy, he will face it when it’s time.Country music should do right by Morgan Wallen, he’s apologized for using the N word, over and over and over, when is enough for you people, get over it, move on. The people want his music, why can’t the Country music elites see that. If I could speak to Morgan wallen, I’d tell him keep your head up high, keep making music that your fans love you for. P.S. put that sign up anyway…lol
May 22, 2024 @ 3:45 pm
Let’s be honest, country music folk is woke. where is the patriotism that used to be a big part of country? I can’t remember a country artist that wasn’t in trouble constantly that’s part of their journey and what makes them such great writers. It comes from the soul and life experiences the more you rag on him the better he gets, you give him material. . Morgan Wallen was not the only country artist that was banished from award shows. Jason Aldean one of the best country artist of all times was also banished because of a song that we all need right now to bring us together in this country. “Try that in a small town” we should ALL be patriotic. This world is in shambles right now and all you woke folk are responsible thank God for Morgan and Jason being true to who they are and patriotism. Morgan Wallen is one of the greatest country artists of all times hit after hit, after hit. I am 64 and he is the person that drove me to love country music so much along with Luke Combs and Jason Aldean & Luke Bryan. Sorry, but you people are woke. I won’t watch the award shows cause they’re bullshit. You practically admitted it here. It’s not about things he says it’s about his talent you give Lainey Wilson, who hasn’t even toured the country entertainer of the year she’s great but it’s laughable. She’s not half or a quarter of what Wallen is. It’s not her time. He has a right to say and think what he feels. According to the constitution freedom of speech right. you people suck. Morgan and Jason Laughing all the way to the bank. Morgan and Jason are exactly what this country needs now. Can’t wait to watch you Woke flip when Donald Trump gets back in office. you guys are phony AF.
May 22, 2024 @ 3:53 pm
Morgan wallen is the most popular country singer. The reward for that is you sell tickets to shows Mac sell albums and get streams on Spotify. Wallen gets paid for being who he is. That’s the reward.
But nobody owes him respect. He’s not owed awards, he’s not owed approval from a city council, he’s not owed celebration. His music sucks and he seems like a bad person. That the ways he sucks endears him to many is fine. Your reward for the for the controversy that sells is the popularity. That’s what the money is for. That’s what he’s pursued that’s what he’s gotten.
But it’s pathetic how his fans keep begging for anything else. He gets to be the guy he wants to be. He can say the N word! He can throw chairs off buildings he can miss shows cause he’s drunk, and he can make garbage pop bullshit. The only consequence to any of that is fines at most and some people might not like you. Oh well.
Truly I tell you Morgan wallen has his reward.
May 22, 2024 @ 4:04 pm
Who cares about some dumb awards… that boy doesn’t make music to win awards. He makes music to make music and your little awards ceremony can kick rocks.
May 22, 2024 @ 4:20 pm
Just leave him alone. He’s just a boring little man who releases too many bad songs. Americans love him?! Surprise surprise land of the one billion gross Donald’s burgers sold. Ignore him and one day he will be forgotten.
May 22, 2024 @ 4:23 pm
“May 21st, the Nashville City Council struck down a request by the contractors for Morgan Wallen’s new bar on Lower Broadway …..” for “a proposed sign …”
To hell with the sign, I’d think this guy is should have to worry about getting the place itself licensed–at least with him a part of it.
Where I am, and the State Liquour Authority will not give you a license to open a bar if you have a felony conviction or a felony case pending, or even a serious misdemeanors. I have experience with New York, not Tennessee, but I’d think Tennessee would have similar standards.
Yeah, there are ways to apply for a waiver–especially if the criminal incident was in the distant past–but if you have a very recent criminal incident involving reckless behavior at a licensed liquor establishment, for goshsakes, I’d expect the commissioners to look askance at letting you be an owner–and the very public face–or a new such establishment.
May 22, 2024 @ 4:44 pm
As the people who were advocating for the City Council to allow for the sign said, Morgan Wallen was not the one applying for it or operating the bar. A massive corporation who runs half a dozen of the Lower Broadway bars is. Saying that you don’t like Morgan Wallen so you’re not going to allow it potentially sets a bad precedent for the city. That said, it was their decision to make, and 30 to 3 is pretty overwhelming.
May 22, 2024 @ 4:24 pm
In his defense he’s still human and if it was one of us joe blows on the street indulging in semi reckless behavior their wouldn’t be much of a conversation about it….maybe he’s going through something?, or maybe just maybe might be trying to make some sort of statement….just my personal thoughts to throw in the pot.
May 22, 2024 @ 4:38 pm
LOL, this silliness is why I pay zero attention to modern “country” music. Country radio jumped the shark in the mid-to-late 90’s, and I stopped listening completely by 2001.
Want GOOD country music? There are thousands of back-catalog records out there by both classic artists, and obscure folks who never got the recognition afforded by the Nashville Sh*tification Machine. I don’t miss modern country one molecule. There’s too much good out there un-listened-to. George Jones alone has enough catalog to keep you busy for months, and never listen to the same song twice. Why the heck would I waste precious listening time on hick-hop?
Wallen is a “bad-boy.” Maybe that’s what they call drunks now, Ol’ ‘Possum had his demons, too, and was a “bad-boy”… but Possum is one of the greatest vocalists in any genre. He had chops. Wallen is just on his way to pop stardom… at best. Let the little girls listen to him, and go find something good… there’s 100 years of ACTUAL country to look at.
May 23, 2024 @ 8:47 am
Nah…pop music isn’t what he’s aiming for…but if he gets getting messed with he may end up there because they’ll except him.
As for Ol Possum…that guy was a walking disaster and vocals are a “Meh” for me.
May 22, 2024 @ 5:01 pm
He’s not a perv, as far as I know. Or a rapist, or a wife-beater. These days that by itself is an accomplishment for someone in his line of work.
Not going to excuse the n-word, but he was probably drunk off his ass and didn’t know he was on camera. It’s not like he posted it on social media or something like that. I think he probably does regret it and he did attempt to make amends. Compare that behavior to, say, Kanye and it’s not even close. And Kanye still has 70 million monthly listeners on Spotify by the way. The dude complemented Hitler and posted a swastika on Twitter. No apologies that I know of, and still going pretty strong. You can get away with that kind of stuff now, it’s crazy.
Hurling a chair off a building is honestly kinda rock n roll. Obviously if someone had been injured that would change things.
As for the music, it’s not half bad, in my opinion. With 36 songs it’s just a dump truck backing up and unloading on the listener’s head. There’s a pretty decent mainstream country album in there. There’s also a bro-country album in there. You just gotta make sure you have a skip button handy if you’re gonna go there.
May 22, 2024 @ 5:05 pm
Not article related but Trig, any thoughts on Apple Music’s 100 greatest albums not having any country albums on it save Kacey musgraves “golden hour”. I’m country biased but not having red headed stranger on there is ridiculous.
May 22, 2024 @ 5:23 pm
May have something on this soon. Busy day.
May 22, 2024 @ 7:21 pm
I can imagine you stay busy, appreciate it.
May 22, 2024 @ 5:39 pm
What are you talking about? He did win Best male country singer in my book. It is outrageous how they are treating him. The ACM’s were very disrespectful to him. Keep playing Morgan – Keep recording! Great job.
May 22, 2024 @ 6:14 pm
I really don’t understand why country music has punished Morgan like this. So many country music stars past and present have been accused of and done so much worse than Morgan. What happened to Johnny Cash when he went to jail for drugs?
I agree that Morgan needs to grow up, but then again who doesn’t? He will eventually learn on his own, nobody needs to make sure that he’s punished!
May 22, 2024 @ 6:38 pm
Cash never went to jail for drugs. Good lord. It’s okay to have an opinion, but make it an informed opinion.
May 23, 2024 @ 2:16 am
Sorry Jimmy, You’re the one that needs to be better informed

Ffs. Cash spent one night in jail. He was arrested a number of times, but he spent no time in prison. https://folsomcasharttrail.com/the-trail/blog/did-johnny-cash-go-to-prison
And to be clear, Wallen isn’t even the beginning of a pimple on the late great Johnny Cash’s ass. ????
May 24, 2024 @ 12:29 am
Did I say he had gone to prison? No. I said he went to jail!
Stop trying to make it look like you’re so smart when you know nothing! I could care less what you think about Morgan Wallen or anything else. You’ve already proven yourself to be pretty uneducated. You also need to try and make others look stupid just so you can look like you know something!
May 22, 2024 @ 6:17 pm
I really don’t understand why country music has punished Morgan like this. So many country music stars past and present have been accused of and done so much worse than Morgan. What happened to Johnny Cash when he went to jail for drugs?
I agree that Morgan needs to grow up, but then again who doesn’t? He will eventually learn on his own, nobody needs to make sure that he’s punished! And the use of the “N” word? The only reason that was ever found out is because a neighbor caught it on their phone! It wasn’t like he stated it on FB or X (formally known as Twitter)
May 22, 2024 @ 6:31 pm
I think y’all seriously need to get a life he is not a bad person yes he’s made some bad decisions but who hasn’t can you obviously throw a stone and say that nobody in this world has not done anything wrong we’re not perfect we make mistakes I’m not trying to say what he’s done is wrong but if you keep putting him down we’re just going to build him up as his fans so it’s okay keep running his name to the dirt and talking trash about him quit bringing up the past that’s the problem with the world now everybody keeps bringing up everybody’s past we all have a past you need to take a look at yourself and realize you have a pass and you’re not perfect all I can say is get over yourself and get a life we’re all going to respect him as fans and still give him 100% even if y’all tear him down so keep on tearing him down cuz we’re going to lift him up and if you don’t like it you know what you can do have a good day ❤️
May 22, 2024 @ 7:32 pm
Country music has gotten rid of their Biggest stars Jamie Johnson, Travis Tritt and so on because they don’t adhere or play by CMA standards. They have gone woke political and so called politically correct. I myself don’t listen to Country music Radio anymore for this reason. Yeah so what they have run ins with the labor say things that are not POLITICALLY CORRECT we all do it, the fans are what’s important as well as record sales. Morgan Wallen is selling records and selling out stadiums so the HELL with the CMA’S and counterparts country music. Country ain’t Country anymore GFY CMA
May 22, 2024 @ 7:58 pm
Morgan has done many charitable since his arrest, didn’t see any good about him in the article. Love Morgan Wallen music. Women loves bad boys, lol. Love Jelly Roll music too. Shall not judge .
May 22, 2024 @ 8:13 pm
I’m telling you all right now Leave Morgan Wallen the hell alone I can tell you all right now that none of you all who continue to put Morgan down for the things that he has done in the past including what he did last month have any right to degrade him for what he has done because I can guarantee you that as God says none of you have the right to throw stones at Morgan for the things that he has done wrong because I am absolutely positive that all of you who are throwing stones at Morgan for what he has done can say that their slates with God are clean so unless your slates with God are clean then none of you have any right to throw stones at Morgan none of you are perfect so don’t try to act like you are Morgan is human and all humans make mistakes so stop degrading Morgan and you have no right to. I love you so much Morgan and I will always continue to come to your defense against anyone and I will continue to always protect you and your name and your actions no matter what they are.
May 22, 2024 @ 8:48 pm
Honestly has Wallen done anything worse than Cash and Hank Jr. Or any of the other country rebels of the past? I wish he would just tell country music machine to bug off. Cash did. And heck George Strait has told them to bug off for decades and he’s still the king. Strait isn’t in the Grand Ole Opry and for good reason. They try to control every aspect of your life and music. I like some of Wallen songs and some I can’t stand, but heck he can really have a lifelong successful career without the ACM’s and the industry idiots. Go your own way, Wallen
May 22, 2024 @ 8:58 pm
Hey as long as I get to hear his good music and he gets paid that’s all that matters knobody really cares honestly. Rap crap leads our kids into the gutter and your gonna cry about him? Go to bed bud
May 22, 2024 @ 9:40 pm
Woof this comment section reminds me of exactly how large a divide there is in this country, and in its music.
Crazy that a genre can claim hick hop and Jason Isbell, and that an artist can cover another’s (streamed-to-death) work and somehow be considered “deep” for doing so.
I guess evolving is “woke” and being an idiot is “rock and roll.” What would his fans have thought if the chair had killed a police officer? Talk about a bootlickin’ conundrum!
May 22, 2024 @ 10:50 pm
This article got picked up on a Google home page or something so we’re getting a lot of out-of-towners blowing in. It happens sometimes.
May 22, 2024 @ 10:23 pm
Does Sirius/XM even play anything by Morgan Wallen? I have a driving job and have been listening to my satellite radio daily for three years. Although I tune into “Willie’s Roadhouse” and “Outlaw Country” for hours while making my deliveries, I can’t recall hearing a Morgan Wallen song! I don’t even know what he sounds like!
May 22, 2024 @ 10:42 pm
I’m sure “The Highway” is all up behind Morgan Wallen. “Willie’s Roadhouse” and “Outlaw Country” wouldn’t ever go near him.
May 22, 2024 @ 11:05 pm
I know Morgan personally
He stayed on my couch a few nights a week when he first moved to Nashville. I worked nights and my co worker /roommate was Morgan’s best friend. I didn’t get to know him as well as I would have liked too. I am about 15 years older than him. He was wild back then. But never was he rude or disrespectful .Morgan was a real stand up guy. Humbled and almost timid .Smart and fun to be around. Happy go Lucky. He doesn’t deserve to be outcast
He has revolutionized music period. .But I would say to those that worry about Morgan getting a fair shake from Nashville. Don’t be. I can almost guarantee you Morgan could care less. He isn’t perfect but I am honored to be able to call him my friend.
May 23, 2024 @ 6:49 am
I’ve never taken Morgan Wallen to be a reprehensible human being. He comes across to me as a young man who needs to grow up, and someone who probably didn’t face many real consequences when he made mistakes early in life, and so he continues to make them. He also probably has an alcohol problem.
May 23, 2024 @ 7:05 am
He’s 31 years old!
May 23, 2024 @ 12:10 am
My take on why he is popular is that his music mixes multiple genres and his overall sound is new, has modern pop sensibilities and is also ‘tiktok short video dance BS’ friendly. People who like Wallen like modern rap and modern pop too. He’s similar to Post Malone. Whenever I play at dive bar and the jukebox comes on, someone almost always puts on some modern rap shit that sounds like it’s in the same ballpark of Wallen’s music. People like that stuff. Wallen’s music isn’t the corn-fed bro-country nonsense of Trace Adkins or Blake Shelton – that era is over. And his music is edgier than the nut-less boyfriend pop country.
Don’t get me wrong, I hate his music with all my heart and balls.
And for some reason there is the influence of 2000-era butt rock, and bands like the Lumineers and Mumford and sons in modern country. Nothing sounds like Keith Whitley. The closest they get to traditional country is offering up some Joe Diffey cover that somehow resembles a dorm room with wafting scents of Fireball, unwashed laundry, and jizz. But that’s what people want.
May 23, 2024 @ 12:29 am
The chair incident bothers me. Morgan Wallen needs his ass physically kicked. Maybe that will help end is fake drunk tough guy act. Someone could have been seriously injured, or worse, from that. Him calling his buddy the black-friendly derivative of the N-word means absolutely nothing to me. It’s in every virtually every rap song, and black people feign offense to it for the victim clout. I’m sorry but one group can’t be perpetual victims yet be worthy of my respect also. Take it out on check cashing places and fentanyl dealers.
May 23, 2024 @ 1:23 am
…morgan wallen’s continuous escapades give country award shows an air of chinese party congresses. or as basil fawlty would say: “don’t mention the war”.
May 23, 2024 @ 1:44 am
There are so many negative comments on 3 different but related subjects. Personally, I think anyone who can produce 2 Double albums with every song on them good if not great,an Artist & a Darn good one. Let’s start with that “N” word almost 3 years gone by,I am not sure why anyone should be offended by this word:Black as well as white, call one another this. Face it ,if we are still hung up on Race issues..how come Cracker Barrel has not been ask to change their racists name? Secondly, the chair tossing-he never made 1 statement of this but, having a child with another person puts a bond between 2 people..if they like it or not..the sudden marriage of the X & the fact that another man will also have a part in raising his Son,plus the many 2 night sold out Stadium Events in many big places, going on now for almost a straight year:should have took most of us over the edge. Then, you have Nashville AMC CMA acting as if they all have a perfect life records. If they are gonna give Lainey Wilson..(no hate on Lainey)Entertainer of the Year, when to my knowledge has not even headlined her own Tour..What kind of polls & people are casting votes? I think that the Top 100 & facts on whose putting out good music, decision making by the people’s who buy & listen ..thats the rates or votes I would treasure most .Morgan continues to put out songs that my Blue collar, still love my mother & like to have a drink & some dances (some people would call that a good time). He has remained true to those who where there for him ,by not forgetting, even including & taking some new country artists along for the Tour ride. In fact,Morgan Wallen is a good man,he never lied about anything he did or said..he took responsibility and never denied ,when it came to his Son. Statements of him running wild, getting drunk & having alot of Ladies, I see no proof . Face it alot of people are just jealous, but in reality, how long has it taken, how many miles have been traveled, how many off the road backwood Bars or Town Fairs, with an audience of less than a few ,has Morgan & his Band played to get to where they are??Facts still speak ..Numerous Statiums over a spread of Land..SOLD OUT! People of every color & language old & young pay to see this Young Man put on a Show..I am not sure if anything else needs to be said.

First, “Cracker Barrel” is not a racist name, unless you want to take it as racists against Whites. The social media canard that “Cracker” is meant as a slave owner cracking a whip as opposed to a “cracker” meaning a small hard bread product has been debunked ad nauseum. Cracker Barrel was a euphemism for poor country people.
Second, the reason the N-word is frown upon being used by Whites is the history of that term being used towards individuals who were also victims to chattel slavery. Sure, it would be great if NOBODY used that word, Black or White. But Black people use it to take back control of a word that was used to degrade them for centuries, while Whites were the ones the ones doing the degrading.
It is important to understand the context that Wallen used the word in, and think he shouldn’t be “cancelled” for it, and recognize the sort of dystopian way it was revealed how he used that term. But you can also think these things, and still understand that he shouldn’t have used it in the first place.

I am so tired of this, Beyonce has made videos of her stomping police cars but now it’s OK she can be on country music. Morgan is great! He’s made a couple of mistakes but this is ridiculous!
May 23, 2024 @ 2:59 am
I love Morgan’s music. If I was him I would pull everything from Nashville. he makes them to much money for them to treat him like they do. Put a bar in Knoxville and they will come. I would stop having concerts there also his fans are not centered in Nashville they drive there and rent motels and spend money. Take all that away. I assure you if he snubbed them they will change their tunes money talks. He doesn’t need Nashville maybe that’s part of his problem when he has made mistakes it’s been in that town.
May 23, 2024 @ 4:47 am
ACM previously gave that guy an award for vocalist of the year ?!? As much as Wallen relies on Auto-tune, that is pretty insulting to the other artists. He should have been forced to share that award with Melodyne, since the software did most of the work.
The building was six stories tall, not three. And the chair landed near two police officers. Wallen was fortunate that no one was hurt, because he could have killed someone.
Country music does have a Morgan Wallen problem. The guy is a poser. Fake singing (relies on Auto-tune/ PitchCorrect). Most of his songs are covers, written by others, or co-writes with professional writers. This is someone whose poplularity seems to rely on looking the part, rather than any actual musical talent. This poser is one of the hottest-selling acts in Country music while more authentic musicians struggle to get recognized.
So much for “three cords and the truth.”
May 23, 2024 @ 5:24 am
First of all, country music doesn’t need saving and you’re way overthinking things. Morgan is who Morgan is and country music is what it is, it’s a culture and a region and an idea and a unique genre…You’re not going to change it, and we’re not going to change just because people have a problem with any aspect of it. It’s mostly White, comes out of a certain tradition, and there’s nothing wrong with that and everyone needs to chill out. (Beyonce, please go back to whatever it is you do. You are not country. Laughable. (All the Woke activists and anti White haters makes issues out of everything. We like our country music, we love Morgan and again everyone take a chill pill. No one cares.
May 23, 2024 @ 7:14 am
Nothing shared in this article is “anti White.” It’s anti getting arrested, including for felonies. It’s anti making country music look bad for using a word society has deemed reprehensible. It’s about not giving “woke” media easy ammunition to attack country music because Morgan Wallen is the biggest star.
May 23, 2024 @ 11:25 am
Have you seen the Ken Burns documentary? There has been a long-standing split in Country music between “the Nashville sound” and more authentic country (independents). In modern times, the Nashville sound has evolved into pop country — more pop than country, heavily auto-tuned, and often using checklist lyrics.
If you want to hear traditional country, go with the independents. This web site celebrates authentic music and lambasts the poser pop stars pretending to make country music.
Morgan Wallen is pop country — complete poser.
And there is no need to turn this into a racial thing. Yes, there are a lot of white country musicians. But when you follow the independent artists, there are artists from many diverse backgrounds: Wyatt Flores, Gabe Lee, Rhiannon Giddons, The War & Treaty, Allison Russell, etc.
And this isn’t about politics either. Oliver Anthony Music is independent country. But is so Jason Isbell.
All that matters is whether the music is authentic.
May 28, 2024 @ 12:05 pm
the origins of country music are rooted in the black community. i’m just sayin’…
May 28, 2024 @ 12:06 pm
that reply was for Lisa.
May 28, 2024 @ 3:10 pm
Gross exaggeration.
May 29, 2024 @ 2:59 am
thanks for clearing that up for me.
May 23, 2024 @ 5:24 am
Hearing Mr. Wallen’s song , Thought You Should Know, was my first introduction to his music. It brought me to tears. His second song that caught my attention was ” Mamaw’s House ” that Thomas’s Rhett had asked him to sing with him. Again , tears. From that moment on , I was a fan. My late husband was a fan of country but I live in the Northeast and rarely heard it growing up. I am a fan now and at the age of 73 , his music has enriched and brought smiles to my face.
When I heard about the ” chair incident” , I shook my head and said to myself, ” Morgan, what the heck were you thinking. My second thought was his mother was going to lambast him for being so stupid. Alcohol plays into a lot of stupid decisions it seems.
He apologized, will be making amends and life will go on. We can all have opinions on his actions but really, its none of our business. NO ONE IS PERFECT, PEOPLE. Get over yourselves . Awards are lovely but its the fans attendance at concerts and their purchase of songs that matter. In the grand scheme of things they don’t matter, they are dust collectors.
Do your best to be kind, generous and a true friend. You will never fail if you achieve that.
May 23, 2024 @ 5:59 am
Morgan does Not even have to put up a sign and there will still be 1,000 trying to get in .All the CC people , All y’all are doing is drawing more attention to the matter Free publicity so KEEP ON it’s working !
May 23, 2024 @ 6:00 am
Can anyone say what actually happened the night of the chair incident? We know he threw it obviously, but what prompted it. Was he mad and/or drunk and was trying to hurt someone, or just goofing around and it was an accident? Some may say it doesn’t matter but, just like the N word incident, the article points out context. I really wish he’d get his act together and stop doing dumb things, I have been in his corner but I’m not sure for how much longer.
May 23, 2024 @ 6:29 am
I wish he’d say more and throw more just to offend those scumbags. Nashville Council is nothing but hypocrisy. The only things I’ll hold against him now is a few songs he shouldn’t have wasted time singing and donating money to those organizations like he did.
May 23, 2024 @ 6:50 am
They will never cancel Morgan Wallen . He is a great artist / songwriter. He just needs to move on from the KT Heartbreak and start focusing on his music . Hell Morgan doesn’t need a sign for his bar . People will be lined up for hours to get in . F their sign and Nashville council . But they will sure as hell have their hands out for all the money he will be bringing in to that place . All these people trying to cancel him sure enjoying lining their pockets from him and his music . Bullshit the way they are treating him and taking well deserved awards away from him and giving to the fake country girl blondie that don’t deserve them at all . They act like no other artists have ever done anything wrong or bad … You never hear about all those and them being treated like they are wallen .
May 23, 2024 @ 6:51 am
Trig, you described well how Nashville’s institutions are keeping Wallen at arms length. But how does Wallen feel about this? Does he actually want to be closely tied to Nashville and winning all the TV show awards?
I think Morgan Wallen and his camp might prefer to skip the award shows and keep his current image. And I think keeping Nashville at arms length allows for more cross-over success, instead of being pigeon-holed as boring old country radio.
May 23, 2024 @ 7:08 am
I honestly don’t know how Morgan Wallen or his camp feel about it. The reason people covet these awards is they give performers recognition, and they tend to goose sales. Morgan Wallen seems to be doing just fine without them.
May 23, 2024 @ 6:55 am
Not sure I agree on the Chris Brown point. It’s not fair to say he’s been embraced by the music industry – it’s been over a decade since the Rihanna incident, yet pop radio has refused to send even his most ubiquitous, mainstream-accessible singles to #1 (Freaky Friday, Go Crazy, the latter of which was a high-longevity smash all over other radio formats). He doesn’t get booked for every awards show/TV gig that he should (I believe he was booted from a Michael Jackson tribute on some show a while back, even though everyone has always agreed he’s the right person for that job based on skillset). The same “Twitter elitists” will never let a report on his success go without some degree of criticism.
Diplo, on the other hand, does seem to be a roach that survives everything. He’s embraced by the same elitists no matter how many questionable things he does or gets accused of.
But, ultimately, it’s the echo chamber of the Twitter elitists (who also have the biggest voice in media) that seems to be holding Morgan Wallen back as well. It’s easy to blame it on “woke Gen Z,” but Morgan is actually insanely popular on TikTok and Instagram. Girls and even celebrities who definitely had Black Lives Matter in their profiles at some point have no hesitation to rock out to Morgan Wallen songs, or show videos going to his shows.
I think you also make the great point about who his detractors really are. I find it ironic that the Twitter elite loves to say things like “White people don’t get to forgive someone for racism.” Yet, here, it seems like it’s primarily white people that are still holding this incident against him. He has black fans. Black artists have welcomed him back and even done collaborations. So it’s weird to me that white people don’t get to tell black people to forgive him, but they somehow do get to tell black people not to forgive him.
As far as his awards legacy, I think what hurts him is that while he’s not considered a Luke Bryan or Sam Hunt-level offender in the country space, the “country diehard” audience doesn’t necessarily see him as an incredible artist-artist. He’s still a populist, commercial guy. And since no one’s ranting about how he absolutely is the best in the business …. giving him an award would still be perceived as honoring his unrivaled stardom as opposed to his immense creativity. And since promoting him is also considered a risk from a mainstream/populism standpoint, it becomes easy to justify snubbing him from stuff – the diehards aren’t crying, and the aspirational mainstream isn’t whining.
May 23, 2024 @ 8:02 am
Fair points on Chris Brown. I’m just surprised he still has a career at all. Look at Jimmie Allen. He’s toast. Chris Brown still is very successful, even if he can’t appear at certain places.
I think it’s really important to understand that some of the most diverse audiences you will find in all of country and roots music are at Morgan Wallen shows. Not Rhiannon Giddens shows, not Kane Brown shows. Not Darius Rucker shows. It’s Morgan Wallen shows. Because elite classes have such a stranglehold on discourse in the media, it makes you think most people find Morgan Wallen reprehensible. Most people honestly don’t care. They even laughed off the chair incident.
The issue with the awards is not for Morgan Wallen. It’s for the awards. If you’re not incorporating the forgone most popular artist in country music, and one of the most popular artist in all of music in your presentations, what’s the incentive for fans to tune in? These institutions were already losing relevancy. And by not representing their constituents, they make it even worse for themselves.
May 23, 2024 @ 6:57 am
Morgan Wallen clearly divides opinion but he clearly has a lot of fans. He is not the first to behave badly. George Jones, Merle Haggard, Johnny Paychek etc were no angels and Wallen has probably not behaved nearly as badly as they did. He certainly has not behaved as badly as some other more current stars. His albums contain a lot of tracks, he pushes boundaries. For me, a fair few to skip over, but on his albums also contain some pretty good country tracks. I feel you good probably make a fairly decent country album of 10 track from his last 2 mega albums. I am not his biggest fan but I do enjoy some of his music and if given a chance would go see him perform. The best music around? Probably not but it is a matter of opinion.

Holy shit this comment section is filled with run on paragraphs. I wonder what Facebook group this article got linked to.

We need a few outlaws today
Instead of a cookie cutter singer that nashville is trying to sell. Boycot fake awards!! Political

Garth Brooks is behind the sign issue no doubt. He can’t have someone else steal his fake-tears bubble.

…that photo up there, is it mug shot the the third – “without the grin this time!”? or the fourth – “let’s take one in a suit!” – of that infamous night?
May 23, 2024 @ 10:32 am
The number of middle-aged women who always rush to defend Morgan as if he’s their own misunderstood son, is quite comical. This comment section is chock-full lol.

He’s a punk who has been allowed too much leverage on his actions. Some jail time might help him open his eyes.

Don’t y’all think this outlaw bits done got outta hand?
May 23, 2024 @ 3:36 pm
I’m pretty sure Hank didn’t do it this way.
May 23, 2024 @ 4:35 pm
Yeah, Hank did it exactly this way, but with more drugs and alcohol.
May 23, 2024 @ 12:12 pm
I’m currently reading Mark Ribowsky’s biography of Hank. I don’t recommend it. He knows how to spin a sentence but it reinforces why most Yankees shouldn’t write about the South or country music. Every chapter is full of white guilt or calling some of Hank’s best songs, “sexist.” He also loves to take potshots (i.e. lunatic right-wing retainers) at Hank Jr and the country music fan base. He called Hank III a musical outlaw but not Hank Jr. Which is bizarre since Jr. broke away from replicating his daddy’s music and mother’s brainwashing (Ribowsky gives Audrey a free pass for her insane behavior) to carve his own musical path. Both younger Hanks didn’t take the easy and expected road. I suspect Ribowsky slandered Junior over political differences especially since he miscategorized Hank’s infamous Fox News interview. Calling Junior’s music anti-intellectualism is a gross mistake. Junior had some missteps but his finest tunes are full of poetry and witty lines.
Not to bury the lede but it is a good thing social media didn’t exist in Hank’s time. Holy cow. He was out of control and getting away with stuff that makes throwing a chair off a roof look like chicken feed. Wallen is an inmature humanoid but place him in 1951 and he looks like a choir boy compared to Hank. Social media and the 24/7 newscycle completely changed the game on how fans and detractors view stars. We view the legends’ antics as humorous stories but are aghast when a modern star buys cocaine. The closest comparison is how fans will welcome forgiveness for a sports hero on their team but demand the ax for a miscreant on the rival squad.

I only read about 10 comments so this may have already been mentioned. I don’t compare artists to other artists-not in behavior or in talent. He has some music I like and some I don’t. As I have watched his career I find myself wondering if he has a mental health or substance abuse issue. It would explain the apparent lack of self control and self-destructive behaviors. As an older person and a parent I hope someone in his camp can intervene before he crashes and burns. He’s a young man with a child-it’d be terrible to have another country music tragedy. Just my unsolicited thoughts

This article is the definition of “slow news week.” Rtrher than write about anything of substance just write a pseudo-biographical story with the worst bits.
To the author: you can do better. If you need help let me know
May 23, 2024 @ 5:02 pm
This article is the definition of contextualizing a news story that came up this very week, which was the Nashville City Council refusing to approve a Morgan Wallen sign, a week after a country awards show awkwardly had Post Malone sing a song that was supposed to be a duet with Morgan Wallen. Tying all of these incidents together illustrates the complexity of the Morgan Wallen situation, and how the industry is attempting to navigate it.

It’s country music he creates and sometimes he break something yes* okay okay when did country music get so tender and correct? Geez
May 23, 2024 @ 8:17 pm
Say what you will, but the article is ridiculous, “Jelly Roll is a convicted felon who has done prison time”….FUCK YOU, so did Johnny Paycheck,Merle Haggard (who was pardoned), AND MORE….It’s the fact that Morgan Wallen is a young guy, who does what HE likes, and the people just so happen to like it as well, He makes dumbest choices and struggles with his vices, im 35 and do the same shit, he’s NORMAL….he’s HIMSELF…AUTHENTIC….and to be that young and be out there doing it every night even though your reading the negative feedback, while trying to raise a kid in a “normal” setting, ontop of his dad being a pastor, and mother a southern Belle, he’s got pressure from every angle, but he doesn’t give up because he enjoys making music, it’s not about the few who don’t like it, it’s about doing what you love and staying true to yourself, while being grounded. I DID A MILLION TIMES worse shit than he’s done by the time I was 19, and didn’t have to deal with half the bullshit he does…..Cut the man some slack, and stop using people’s past against them, stop focusing on wyf they’re doing and focus on what you’re doing….everyone has some dirt on them, who the hell wants to have someone constantly reminding them of their mistakes and all…noones perfect, but if your gonna live life, you may as well be dumb, make mistakes and have some fun and learn some lessons, life’s too short…enjoy the music and the shows….or dont…whatever you like, but Jesus H Christ, mind your own damn business before someone starts minding it for you.
May 23, 2024 @ 8:25 pm
From the article:
“As many Morgan Wallen fans love to point out, compared to the antics of country stars in the past, Wallen’s actions seem minimal, and his consequences punitive, at least within the music industry. Though the press loves to harp on the bad behavior of Wallen, it’s nothing compared to many of hip-hop’s biggest stars where murder, convicted felonies, and other infractions checker their past.”
May 25, 2024 @ 5:14 pm
Yeah,Michelle,I’m sure you’d be excusing Wallen’s missteps if he resembled Darius Rucker,Kane Brown,Jimmie Allen,etc.
March 12, 2025 @ 11:48 am
Hey everyone!! NO harm meant. Sorry to all of you if I harmed you. Good luck moving forwards.
