Landman Soundtrack Includes Killer New Dwight Yoakam, Flatland Cavalry Tracks

Where Yellowstone left off helping to promote independent country and roots artists, the 2024-2025 series Landman starring Billy Bob Thorton stepped up. Written and sometimes directed by Taylor Sheridan, with Yellowstone Music Supervisor Andrea von Foerster selecting the music, the series gave a worthy boost to some deserving performers over its first ten episodes on Paramount+.

Vincent Neil Emerson, 49 Winchester, Turnpike Troubadours, Ward Davis, Brent Cobb, Kaitlin Butts, Whitey Morgan, Ian Noe, The Red Clay Strays, Cody Jinks, and Tanner Usrey are just some of the worthy names that made the list. The series released a score soundtrack composed by Andrew Lockington back in March. But now they have released an official song soundtrack that includes some of the top tracks showcased in the series.
You might wonder what the reason is for releasing a soundtrack compilation of previously-released songs in 2025. With Spotify making many of these songs accessible to our fingertips, anyone can make a playlist of these songs. But there’s actually a good reason for this soundtrack. Billy Bob Thornton who also has his own band called The Boxmasters, and country legend Mark Collie who plays the sheriff on the series actually contributed to five original tracks that made the record.

Thornton and Collie are co-writers on the songs “Livin’ It Up In Texas” sung by Billy Gibbons, “She’ll Dance For Whiskey” sung by Parker McCollum, “That’s What Lonely People Do” performed by Dwight Yoakam, “Blood for Black Gold” played by Ronnie Dunn, and “Midland After Midnight” by Flatland Cavalry. This gives the soundtrack a unique flavor compared to a playlist of songs featured on the show.
The Billy Gibbons track was released previously, and is a pretty wild song. The Parker McCollum and Ronnie Dunn tracks also have a pretty strong contemporary feel. But Dwight Yoakam’s “Blood For Black Gold,” and the Flatland Cavalry track “Midland After Midnight” are both strong new country songs (listen below), bolstering this soundtrack beyond the previously-released material.
During the filming of the first season, Billy Bob Thornton would pull out his guitar and sing or work on the songs on the set with Collie. “We wrote a couple of songs [that] were kind of inspired by the area, that business world. We’ll see if they end up on anything. And maybe they will, maybe they won’t, but they’re at least there,” Thornton said.
Well now they have ended up on something, with big country performers singing them.

Great news, Flatland’s song is great, they usual done have much steel in their stuff, but do on this one, wonder who’s playing on it.

On Apple Music only tracks 1, 7, 10, 11, 12, and 13 are available to stream.

I found the Flatland Calvary and Clint Black singles on their artist page as stand alone singles (not part of a compilation). They both use the Landman artwork but are 1 of 1 tracks and not designated “various artists.”
I can’t find the Billy Gibbons single anywhere.

I found the Billy Gibbons track “Livin’ It Up Down In Texas” on Amazon Music. It is listed as part of an EP titled “Cruising with Billy Gibbons.” The EP contains 7 songs on but it is not available for purchase. Streaming only. Ugh!

I eventually found the Gibbons single. It was released on January 17, 2025 under “Livin’ it Up Down in Texas – Single.” The artwork is the shape of Texas with a “1” in the middle. No reference, association, or mention of Landman.
I’m guessing if these songs were released prior to the soundtrack, they won’t populate into the soundtrack listing and we have to go on a scavenger hunt. This is on Apple Music.

Yeah, I’m not 100% sure how this soundtrack is populating on DSPs. On Spotify, all the tracks are there, but it’s unclear if they’re in any one place. The track list might be more for the physical copies.

Happy anytime there’s new music from Dwight.

Love Dwight

I do like the 2 featured tracks. Both very good. This album sounds well worth a listen. The album is listed with same cover but not all the tracks are available on Amazon unlimited. Only tracks 1, 7, 10-13. Odd.

Come back for good,Dwight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Clint Black track should have been highlighted. Amazing stuff.
I have been listening to Black’s older work lately and “Nothing’s News” might be one of the most underrated songs in the country canon.
It is a travesty he hasn’t made the HOF yet.

I’ve been enjoying early Clint Black of late, too. The first three albums are nearly flawless in terms of songwriting, and the picking is, of course, great. I agree on “Nothing’s News.” A stone classic.

That song lost me at the beginning with the programmed drums. Interesting too that they didn’t really tout that track in any of the press for this, but it is an original to this soundtrack.

Black’s debut album is one of the very best country albums made. And as a debut it’s almost unsurpassed, no matter the genre.
Sadly, none of his other albums comes close.

Outside of the country world, I’ve noticed a few artists (Pavement, Everything but the Girl) that have released new “best of” collections with no new tracks and in Pavement’s case the album was just a slightly revised version of a previous best of.
I wonder if there is a boost they get from the streaming algorithm when they put “new” official releases in the mix. Though both have physical releases as well. I’m sure someone at these labels figured out a way this makes money.

If this show turns to shit with the second season, I’m done with Sheridan. I really, really hope it’s not so.
Landman is the only show worth watching these days. Lots of shows started out great with season 1 (Yellowjackets and Yellowstone among them), but lost their course during season 2, only to end up even worse during the successive seasons.
I can still rewatch X-Files (with Fox Mulder), at least. It’s probably even more relevant now than it was some 30 years ago.
