Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday Becomes Worthy Television Special (Review)
On April 29th and 30th, 2023, Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday was commemorated at the Hollywood Bowl in California with a two-day mega celebration that saw a huge host of performers paying tribute to Willie in song. Both audio and video recording equipment were on site to capture it all. On Friday, December 15th, an album, plus a Blu-Ray package of the concert were released, with the digital/streaming set of the concert including a stunning 53 tracks.
But for those that didn’t pony up for the Blu-Ray copy or missed the concert’s brief stint in select theaters this summer, Sunday night (12-17) saw CBS airing significant portions of the 2-day event for all the world to see. Many Willie songs were sung, some legendary collaborations ensued, Miranda Lambert’s fringe was longer than Snoop Dogg’s spliff, and pound for pound, it was more entertaining than any country music awards show in the last decade or so.
Billy Strings opened the show with Willie’s iconic show starter, “Whiskey River,” giving our generation’s version of Flatt & Scruggs, Jimi Hendrix, and The Grateful Dead all wrapped into one some deserved national television time. Beck was also an early performer. Witnessing him playing with the house band that included Jamey Johnson on guitar, Don Was on bass, and Gabriel Witcher on fiddle, Beck proved why a dedicated country album from him is long overdue.
But one of the downers about what made it onto the broadcast is that it included very few of the independent up-and-comers who made the trip out to California, and instead favored the more household names, including some that turned in subpar performances.
Charley Crockett was only seen briefly in a backstage shot and during the show’s finale. Same for Margo Price, Waylon Payne, and The Avett Brothers. Tyler Childers and Sturgill Simpson weren’t seen at all, though the latter might have been Sturgill’s own choice. Some legends who performed were also left off such as Dwight Yoakam, Lyle Lovett, Rodney Crowell, and Emmylou Harris.
You can’t include two days of performances in a two-hour television special, but we got a double dose of Sheryl Crow who sang the Willie-penned “Crazy.” Sheryl is crazy for trying, and crazy for crying, and crazy to think she’s anything more than a vapid pop star who inexplicably always finds herself as the centerpiece of events such as this. She did turn in quality performances though, which you can’t say for some of the other performers.
Dave Matthews’ terrible rendition of “Funny How Time Slips Away” somehow made the cut. He got crossed up during the solo and started laughing at himself, but the editors left it in. The Chicks did pretty good job with a twangy and breakneck version of “Bloody Mary Morning,” but Natalie Maines could barely keep up, clearly winded with her eyes bugging out.
Bad performances were the exceptions though, not the rule. With just a microphone and a guitar, Willie Nelson’s son Lukas Nelson turned in a stunning rendition of “Angels Flying Too Close To The Ground” that was arguably the greatest performance of the event. Though Kris Kristofferson has officially retired from touring, to see him sing “Loving Her Was Easier” with Rosanne Cash was a treat.
George Strait’s “Sing One With Willie” is a pretty forgettable song with its strained rhymes and hackneyed verses. But seeing George Strait and Willie Nelson reprise “Pancho and Lefty” was worth blocking off the two hours to watch the special if nothing else.
Of course there were plenty of pot jokes and references, including Willie singing “Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die” with Snoop Dogg. Helen Mirren may have seemed like a Hollywood A-lister who was out-of-place, but made up for it with her sincere oral tribute to Willie. Woody Harrelson and Ethan Hawke also did well acting as de facto Master of Ceremonies.
Then you had Keith Richards come out, looking spry at 80—a cool decade younger than Willie. The two sang “We Had It All” together, which was another landmark of the presentation. And hopefully the irony of Willie and Keith singing Billy Joe Shaver’s classic song “Live Forever” wasn’t lost on the audience.
Though at times Willie may have been a little breathy (after all, he’s NINETY), his solo’s on Trigger were hot and spot on, and he sincerely seemed to be enjoying himself. The concert ended with everyone coming out on stage and singing “On The Road Again,” chased by “Happy Birthday.”
In many respects, it really didn’t matter who performed or what happened for Willie Nelson’s 90th. The fact that Willie is still alive, making music, and still relevant enough for a major television network to give his birthday a two-hour special during the heart of the Christmas season when people actually still watch these things really speaks to the beloved nature of his music, and his soul.
Everybody loves Willie, and everybody is celebrating that we’ve enjoyed 90 years of life with him on this planet, and counting.

Those that missed the special, it will stream on demand for certain subscriptions on Paramount+.

Shame that Dwight Yoakam and Charley Crockett weren’t shown in the CBS broadcast, except at the very end for the singalong.

I understand that you can’t squeeze everyone who performed over two days into a two-hour TV special. But perhaps they could have done a montage that showed 15-30 seconds of each of the other performers. For someone like Charley Crockett, that would have been a big deal because looking at the internet chatter, a LOT of people were watching this.

The show only 1.5 hrs, not 2 hrs. I’m ordering the 3 piece Blu ray set.
I love Willie! And Lukas too. ❤️

Willie opened the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage Alaska in the mid 70’s but I was not able to attend because I was working as a carpenter at Terminal Camp in Valdez. He has done so much for American’s spirit and hope and joy because he sings wonderful stories and is so unpretentious.

I thought Dave Matthews was fine, his take on “Funny How Time Slips Away” was unique and cool, I hardly noticed the mistake.
Gotta say it was hard to see Kris Kristofferson slipping so bad. God bless him.
All in all a well done event.

We all make mistakes, and I don’t mean to hound on Dave Matthews. I definitely did notice it, and so did Dave. My only question is if he flubbed his performance and there are only so many slots to give, why not give that slot to someone who performed and didn’t flub their performance? The answer is of course that it’s Dave Matthews, and CBS wanted him to help get eyeballs on all the Ozempic commercials.

Wow, that’s classy. Listen, I don’t care much for her music. But women who shoot down other women (especially out of jealousy, I might add – and especially with such tacky jabs as this) are bottom shelf.
This review is full of unkindness that isn’t necessary to make one’s point, and those jabs lower my interest in the rest of what this mean person has to say. Taste is subjective, and an attitude like that shuts down my ability to give credence to this article. It tells me that person has more interest in taking jabs than simply explaining what (they felt) was missing.

I loved it! And I’m not a country music person. I thought it was an “authentic “ evening. Those who were there performing were there because they respect Willy. Yes, there were some better than others. Still… it was a very entertaining evening.
His son Lucas stole the show! He has his dad’s twang!
I loved the song with George Strait! I don’t care what the reviewer said! I loved it! Especially under these circumstances!
Sheryl Crowe is over the hill. Her voice isn’t what it was. But she was charming and genuine.
Actually…. No one can touch Willie Nelson!

Y’all are too harsh on Sheryl Crow. She’s really talented and has Jane been doing pop music for years. Collaborations with Will Hoge, Jason Isbell, Mavis Staples among others come to mind. Talented multi-instrumentalist to boot.
Someone had to do “Crazy,” and no one was gonna make it as good as Patsy did. I thought she sounded and looked great.
Getting two slots…I’ll grant you that might have been too much.
Sean
December 18, 2023 @ 6:38 am
Calling her vapid is insane. She made two decade defining albums in the 90’s and her influence on the generations of artist to follow is undeniable. The chorus of “If It Makes You Happy” would have been enough to cement her place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I don’t want to not like Sheryl Crow. The issue is that she’s ALWAYS involved in these such things, and often the center of attention. I’ve been pointing this out now for over a decade. Willie Nelson is a country music artist. Where were some of his old-time buddies who used to play with him all the time like Ray Wylie Hubbard? Why not show Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, etc. as opposed to showcasing Sheryl on the special twice?
I saw Sheryl Crow perform at a country festival this summer (FairWell Fest). I kept waiting for her to play some of her later stuff. It never happened, it was all of her pop hits from the ’90s that stuck out like a sort thumb on the lineup. “All I Want To Do Is Have Some Fun.” It just doesn’t fit, creating a conflict with country fans where there doesn’t need to be one.
Erik North
December 18, 2023 @ 8:00 am
And it would probably behoove people to be reminded of how much Sheryl was influenced by Linda Ronstadt, who had recorded her own version of “Crazy” back in 1976 (on her album HASTEN DOWN THE WIND), arguably the only other version of that song that people remember besides Patsy’s classic 1961 recording.

I don’t know specifically about this event, but I do know that in the past, Sturgill has requested he be left off of certain releases from these tribute concerts, including ones he’s participated in promoted by Blackbird Presents. So in this instance, it may have been Sturgill’s call.

What was with that out-of-left-field blast of hate towards Sheryl Crow? Maybe she’s not your cup of tea, I’m not wild about her myself, but you said she performed well… so why are you taking time out of your review of a birthday concert to call her names?
Trigger
December 18, 2023 @ 1:17 pm
It’s not out of left field at all. Folks have been criticizing Sheryl Crow’s automatic inclusion in any and all tribute albums and shows for over a decade now. If they wanted to include Crow that’s fine. But artists such as Charley Crockett, Tyler Childers, Margo Price, The Avett Brothers, etc could have benefited more from the face time, and they got zero performances on the broadcast when Crow got two. That deserves criticism. Would have also been cool to see Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Lyle Lovett, and the others.
RG
December 18, 2023 @ 4:12 pm
You know why Crow is an automatic inclusion? Because is a gifted song writer, brilliant multi instrumentalist and great performer who loves and respects country music. You, are a small minded fool well on your way to oblivion.
By the way, I usually detest Dave Matthew’s but thought his performance was honest and beautifully delivered.

“Everybody loves Willie, and everybody is celebrating that we’ve enjoyed 90 years of life with him on this planet, and counting”
You know why everyone loves him? Because he isn’t the type of jerk who tosses out completely unnecessary potshots at someone who has accomplished way more in her life and is way more talented than you will ever be. I’m a bigger fan of the artists who didn’t get played but the dig was wholly unprofessional.
The guy earned the right to invite whoever he wanted to play this concert with him. I bet Willie woild be pissed if he read this…and you know it.

These birthday performances must have been auditions for Willie’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony because Dave Matthews sang “Funny How Time Slips Away” and Sheryl Crow “Crazy” that night too (Chris Stapleton sang “Whiskey River”).
I remember 20+ years ago, Crow said, “when Willie calls, you answer the phone.” Since then, she’s been on every tribute and many studio albums and put in her time on Farm Aids (she should be a board member over Margo Price), 4th of July Picnics, and Outlaw Festivals that she’s well earned her performance spots on any Wille tribute concert (no matter how predictable or hackneyed it’s become). She’s one of Willie’s closest friends and has always answered the call.
Only co-Farm Aid board member Dave Matthews could be closer to Willie (especially since Willie’s relationship with Neil Young appears to be straining of late). DM game Willie’s inductee speech at the HOF. It was incredibly emotional and personal. They are close friends off the stage.
I think Willie is also very close with Chris Stapleton and of late Billy Strings (Willie’s eyes light up when Billy enters a room!).
I think Willie’s personal relationships and artists name brand had a lot to do with what performs got aired last night (over performance merit).

Amy
December 19, 2023 @ 8:05 am
How do you know this??
Trigger
December 19, 2023 @ 9:27 am
Because I’ve been covering Willie Nelson for 15 years, and it is my job to know this. I’m not trying to imply that Willie Nelson doesn’t like Sheryl Crow or anything of the sort. But the simple fact is that an event like this was produced and curated by folks who wanted to cast a wide net of appeal, hoping it would be picked up and broadcast on television. Having performers like Sheryl Crow involved helps these prospects as opposed to having only country artists. Annie often has the final say so on my of these decisions, and has for years.
I understand and respect why Sheryl Crow was involved with this, and perhaps I was a bit too harsh with my characterizations of her. But Saving Country Music advocates for up-and-coming artists, independent artists, and country legends, including multiple ones that performed at this event that didn’t get any face time at all, while Sheryl Crow got two performances. It would be a deselection of my duty to not speak up for these artists who are systemically overlooked in popular culture for performers like Sheryl Crow.
RG
December 19, 2023 @ 6:19 pm
The word you were seeking but uh, don’t seem to know, is dereliction, not “deselection”. You claim you’re in the business but blame the performers for the show’s producers failure to pack all performances from a TWO DAY EVENT into a 2 hour broadcast. With
commercials. Capiche?
Trigger
December 19, 2023 @ 6:39 pm
Oh calm down. It was a spell check change.
It states expressly in the article, “You can’t include two days of performances in a two-hour television special, but we got a double dose of Sheryl Crow.”
I re-stipulated that in multiple comments as well. I completely understand this was a challenge for the producers.
And no “claim” is being made I’m in the “business.” I am in the business.
If you disagree with the opinions shared here, I respect that. This is why there is an open and active comments section here, and why I engage with it.

It was a great show for a great guy and entertainer. I saw a few artists that I didn’t know about. I heard a few renditions of songs I hadn’t heard before. Music greats such as Willie and Bob Dylan change their own songs up now and then. It’s music, enjoy it. Lukas did a perfect job on my favourite song. In an event like this with various contributors, there will always be performances that standout and others that don’t. There will be performances you like and some you don’t. I do not believe any of them were forced to be there, they were there out of love and respect for Willie. Thanks to all the performers for being there and making music for Willie and all of us music fans! Happy 90th Willie.

I grew up on listening to Willie Nelson my parents played his music all the time. I’ve never been fortunate too see him live in concert. But if he is singing or acting in a movie, I’ve gotta listen or watch it. He enriched my life through his music and a few other country singers.
